Extreme Burnout, Dead Ahead (and Inside)

Hey Savages, soooo I've been having some struggles doing my job. I show up every day with the intention of crushing it, but then i sit down at my desk and I'm deer in headlights, have no clue what I'm doing and can't even work and all I want to do is lie down.

I know it's a mental health thing and it's totally warranted considering how effed my company has gotten over the last year or two.

I also know a lot of the feedback on here will be "suck it up, idiot, this is the job" or something like "wow, you're not gonna make it in sales" which is weird because i've been doing it for about 10 years.

Anyone else experiencing symptoms of extreme burnout like this?

That may go beyond burnout. Do you have a therapist? If not, I'd like to gently suggest you speak with someone.
You have my support.

I appreciate you for saying that and totally agree. I've been talking to an executive coach, and the suggestion is look for another gig after a few months of work trying to fix it.
But I've been trying to find a new job and the job market is a total joke, so maybe just bad timing and things'll get better. Luckily I'm doing alright at my current gig and things are such a mess that I can lay low for a bit longer, but I'm just over it, you know?

All I can suggest is baby steps. Get small things accomplished each day. At least do something - it will keep you from getting inside your own head too much.

First off, I'm really sorry to hear that you're going through such a tough time at work. It takes a lot of courage to open up about your struggles, even on an anonymous platform.

Feeling like a deer in headlights and not knowing what you're doing can be incredibly overwhelming, especially when you show up every day with the intention of doing your best. It sounds like the stress and challenges within your company have taken a toll on your mental health, and that's completely understandable given the circumstances.

When I have this feeling I try to do something that will how re-discover my why and one to help with my stress level.

To help with stress I limit my phone use and social media, I prioritize doing things I like throughout the work day for me its going for walks and grabbing a coffee. If coffee gives you too much energy, switch to a non caffeinated tea. Make sure you are drinking lots of water throughout the day and getting enough sleep. When listening to music, have it be happier. Depressing music will make everyone sad so dont do it to yourself

With motivation, doing all of the above usually helps a lot. Especially just saying no time wasting apps during the day.

A big thing I do for motivation I stole from Daniel Pink

"Sleep and Wake up thoughts: On one side of a card, write the answer to โ€œWhat gets you up in the morning?โ€. On the other side, write the answer to โ€œWhat keeps you up at night?โ€. Try different versions of the answers till you are comfortable. Those answers would be your compass. And check if they are still true from time to time. If you are not able to arrive at a comfortable answer to it at all, that is a more fundamental problem to address."

This can help me think about why I chose sales and why I want to do well both short term and long term.

Is it just the job, or do you feel this way about everything in your day?

For added color, the RIFFs my company had were a serious gut punch and so many long time friends that didn't deserve got cut while managers that also didn't deserve it got promotions, title bumps, and pay increases (tale as old as time)

I'm sorry friend. This is not a fun spot to be in. Can you get training help at work? Or do you think you're just checked out? Either way have you tried silently looking for new jobs? This may help you get excited about your future โค

Nah, just super checked out. I've been actively looking, but the market is so weird. Everyone is waiting for the economy to tank, but all the reports from business news are that everything is booming, so who the hell knows what's going on with companies these days, you know?

Sorry to hear that, tough situation that I have been through as well. We are our own best medicine and the healing takes time. I spend a few minutes every morning meditating and only bringing positive energy and find it to be very helpful.

Reading what you have written, my advice is to look at yourself for a good time. your mindset is "suck it up idiot, this is the job" and I don't think that the majority of the feedback you get will be that. I believe the feedback you will get or at least my 2 cents is that it has to be something that you need to determine if the juice is worth the squeeze . I don't think there is any job out there where the employees go in jazzed up to be at work but you shouldn't be staring at your computer screen pulling a Walt Disney. There are other options and you shouldn't feel trapped.

Well it's not so much that I'm telling myself the suck it up thing, you just never know when admitting you're having a hard time to a bunch of salespeople how they'll react haha

But I feel you there, and seeking out other jobs is for sure on my agenda, but it is way harder than ever I've noticed, which maybe means it's just crappy timing

I think everyone faces this at one point or another in their career, to differing degrees. Highly recommend you talk to someone (therapist/counselor) about how you're feeling. No point suffering through this alone when there are really great folks that can help you sort through everything and set you up for success on the other side.

Yes, 100% can relate. When I joined my current gig, it was a dream come true, but slowly everything went to shit and now I am so frustrated. Taking a few interviews helps, just to see that yours is not the worst place (or find something better). Go with the mind set that you are only boosting your ego, end up jumping there- double win ๐Ÿ† Good luck!

Has massive growth ever led to mental breakdown? I have been hustling since 17 years old chasing to strive for success doing odd jobs and unintentionally ended up with Edtech K12 Sales as my first official sales job - A toxic culture with no employee respect eventually me to switch after 18 months. Since reps in Edtech are highly valued, had no option but to continue in Edtech sales. This time it was higher education segment, things looked good in the first few month but slowly it started adapting methodologies like the old Edtech since the management was changed. I decided to move out and switch to B2B SaaS. After 13 months of learning & success, my aspirations werenโ€™t matching with the growth vision shared by my manager and ended up being desperate to switch. Got to a AM-Inside Sales role with a 50% hike. Guess what? It led to my mental break down since the culture is pathetic. In entire journey, all challenges never affected my performance but l am losing the spark to glow and hustle eventually. While I plan to switch, a token of guilt is still alive. The experiences have made me far better and strong as a BDR but blank about the next steps in my career. Thanks for reading. Do share your thoughts.
