First words on an outbound cold call?

Curious to know what’s the excuse (if any) why you’re calling.


“hey, this is Erlich and I’m calling because I saw on your website X”


”hey this is Erlich, do you have 5 seconds?”


“hey, this is Erlich, did I catch you at a bad time?”

Never, EVER say "did I catch you at a bad time?" That's a garbage line from the early 2000s that need to stay there. Try instead:

Hey ___, this is erlich. I know you're not expecting my call. Do you have a moment? I promise to be brief.

Hey ___, this is a cold call. Do you want to hang up now or roll the dice?

Hey ___, this is erlich with ___. I know I'm an interruption. Can I have 27 seconds to tell you why I called?

I use the catch you at a bad time line and my booking/showing ratio is great.

Inviting people to hang up on you is one of my pet peeves for cold call scripts. Why would you want to automatically start off on a lower level than your prospect?

"Hey, this is X calling from Y. I know you weren't expecting my call, but do you have a moment?" They usually ask for clarification on where I'm calling from and it goes from there. If I have something to personalize on, it's more like "Hey, this is X calling from Y. (Insert personalization here)"

I’ll leave it hanging there, usually in a few moments they ask “what can I help
you with?”  Now when I give the pitch it’s because they asked me too...

Find something they did (podcast, article, tweet, LinkedIn profile bio or post) and tie it in to something your company can help them with that’s relevant.
