Fixed Base vs Lucrative OTE

So not too long time ago, I was offered a relatively lucrative OTE position as a BDR but with no base salary, however I preferred not to go for it thinking of it would be too risky as my current post gets me a fixed salary away from sales, for savages that have the same role,is it safe to leave a guaranteed base to a variable OTE with no base that may or may not pay you anything if you have no luck with your targets!!

Appreciated Savages!!

I'll always bet on myself and want a plan with upside vs. 100% base salary...but 0% base is ridiculous. Didn't know legitimate companies did that in the 21st Century.

You don't see a lot of solely commission with no base roles for a reason. Doesnt make sense to take on the risk of making $0 even for a month, when you can find roles with a 50/50 split with a good OTE

i worked 100% commission right out of college and i almost destroyed me financially.

i dont think there is a good enough reason to go commission only in todays world.

Smart move, 100% commission is extremely risky and should not be the case unless you are far enough along in your career that it would be making you more money.

Typically seen in real estate and insurance (if I had to guess, it would be this)

Only way someone should ever work solely on commission is if it's your company and you are just starting it. Think Shark Tank

Nope. A good base salary is essential for me.

In the US, it helps with things like auto loans or mortgages as well. Youโ€™ll have a hard time establishing a decent loan without a base salary.

No base? No deal.

Only time I would ever work 100% commission is starting my own business. And only then, until I could justify a salary for myself.

100% commission comp plans can be VERY lucrative, but you need to be able to weather the ups and downs of the sales cycle. You need to be able to go long periods with no income - especially in the beginning.

100% commission is NOT the way to go.

In the best of times? No. In today's economy? HELL NO

100% commission roles seem to come from companies with extremely high turnover or those that won't be around long

With 100% commission OTE would be limitless, I assume.

Never ever work on 100% commission. Going into an economically rocky environment, a great base can be life saving.

$0 base to me is a bit suspect. Even if their argument is that you can made mad money with all variable... what is the downside of providing a base? As a sales leader, providing a base to my reps means they have that much less anxiety around their paycheck, that even if they have a bad month, or quarter(s), they can depend on at least X amount. If that doesn't exist, it's a bad mental place to be in. Net/net, with no base, that smells of some other shenanigans.
