Fresh start

Hey sales savages! looking to get some advice here and would really appreciate any input. I was laid off from a mortgage company in early March and looking to get into an AE/BDR/SDR role but really struggling to find a new home within the SaaS space. Prior to this mortgage company, I was selling advertising space to Small/medium sized businesses.

For some reason, I've gotten super questioned for moving from a B2B space into a direct to consumer space by recruiters. long story short, I wanted to dive into my first start up and loved every bit of the growth I learned.

What am I missing? I'm very willing to go from being an AE into am SDR role and be a great learner.

I'm having a tough time translating my previous experience for any new role.

thanks in advance

this is common. i feel like recruiters can be so fucking dense sometime you really have to hold their hand about your experience.

If you want to get an AE role, I would think about your past experience and try to figure out how to explain that you can:
- run a discovery call (uncover the prospects problems and align your product to solve those problems)
- run a demo (SHOW how the product solves their problems while uncovering additional needs)
- Manage relationships to get a deal done (starting with a director and getting the VP involved to get the deal done)
- that you have closed a deal from start to finish
(there are many others but these 4 are key)

If you want and SDR role you need to explain:

-that you have experience with a defined prospecting cadence
- you understand how to identify the right person to reach out to
- you can have conversations on the phone and set discovery calls
- you have tracked your metrics in the past (dials per day, meetings set per week, qualified meeting per mont ect)

I'm happy to go back and forth if you want to test out how you would put your current experience into those categories.

I would focus on having a good story as to why you want to change the space that you're in. Don't just say that its because you want to try something different or that you need a job. Go with something kinda like

I've found great success in my current role and have used it to learn and grow significantly, but within it I really missed the feeling of helping small businesses grow and achieve their goals. In my next role I'm really looking to move back into the b2b space so that I can start fostering those relationships again and help businesses succeed.

That won't work on a hiring manager, but its the kind of nonsense a recruiter wants to hear. Just make it personal to you.

First off - dealing with recruiters is difficult. Unless you are an EXACT match for what they are looking for they won’t give you the time of day. So avoid them if you can

Focus your resume on your soft skills and accomplishment which translate into any sales job.

Then reach out directly to hiring managers. LinkedIn is your best tool here.

Good luck!

You might be well served applying to a company that sells cost per click advertising services. Google, Indeed, and many others sell this as their core service.
