going from SDR -> AE: Nailing the Demo Deck

ok so ive helped a few SDRs get to AEs and at some point they have had to present a demo deck as part of the process. So i thought Id share some tips on how to do that well so you can get out of the SDR role ASAP.

(also, i understand this is not the only thing but its ONE part)

  • Get the talk track down.

Make sure you know EXACTLY what you want to say for each slide, write this down and create a script. once you think you have it, read it out loud. if it still sounds good then practice this over and over until you can almost say the script from memory.

  • Make it sound like you

Make this sound like you are talking to a friend or relative. You can say "um" you can say "sooo" how ever YOU TALK, make it sound like that.

when you do this, you come across like you have this under control and are relaxed.

  • Focus on your transitions

what you say when you transition from each slide to the next is a sneaky important part.

You want to make everything flow nicely and not that each slide is starting another monolog.

The best way to practice this is to record your self and watch it back.

if you are in a Discovery Call role play make sure you KNOW what questions you want to ask and WHY you want to ask those questions.

any other tips for our SDR friends??

I'll also add to please update any graphics. I always adds signature hidden in my slides, so I see who copies me without reading first. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Update any copyright dates in the master slides too - nothing worse than slides with 2020 or 2021...when it's 2022!

I love these points! . Writing out what you want to say and then speaking it out loud is so critical. It's so much easier to catch awkward dialogue, bad phrasing, and to your third point, bad transitions, when you verbalize your script. And yes, making it sound like YOU and not like you're reading, is really important. In your job, you'll want to put your prospects and customers at ease, and it's the same thing with an interview demo.

Really great post.

thanks! ive seen ppl when they start to try and do a deck, that they KNOW the concept but when they try to put words to it, they fumble around.

so just practicing EXACTLY what you want to say at first seems to be a nice middle step to not sounding like a robot haha

I've been in sales for over 2 decades and I do this all the time. When I build out a new deck OR I'm learning a new pitch deck - I write out the talking points on 4x6 cards (the act of writing helps me remember) and speak them as I go. Toss out bad cards - rewrite. Then practice. I walk through the house and memorize one card at a time, then do several run throughs until it's perfect. Speaking tone and all. With room for adjustment and in my own words.

It's a huge benefit of working from home and having the other occupants head out for school and work! Until I'm polished, I prefer not to have an audience.
