HELP: A tricky situation

I'm getting my security clearance to work for a new employer. Since government moves the pace of a snail. My start date is set for January.

My boss just got my security clearance form and he's asking why he got it. I like my supervisor, he took a chance on me and I'm his first hire for his new leadership role.

I don't wanna lie because I don't want to burn a bridge but I don't wanna tell the truth and be stuck without a job in december.

WTF do I do??

Update: Came clean, my boss respected the decision. We're setting up time tomorrow to discuss next steps and when I leave.

update 2: my last day is next Friday I'm kinda fucked between now and January ๐Ÿ˜‘

What do I do?

If you have the job on lock, then you really should let them know. He may be cool for you to stay through the end of the year. Just have the conversation.

Unless there is a logical explanation why you would need it in your current company you might just need to own up. If you act like you don't know they could just disregard the request and that screws you up more.

I would be very straight up. Usually I'm for smokescreens but you'll probably needs this dude for any government credentialing that happens in the future. Lay it all out and be a pro.

Cat's outta the bag - own it.
Tell you supervisor you were offered a dream job and took it. You had wanted to wait till December to give notice, but it is what it is. He may usher you out the door (worst case) or let you stick around till Dec 31 - best case.

But don't lie.

If you respect the person and have a security already, let him know. Everybody moves in life :)

A bit confused on the burn a bridge part given that you are planning to leave in a month and it would be the same reaction to you leaving then. Just rip off the bandaid and let them know you are planning to start a new job in January and would be more than willing to work all the way through December. Should be well received

Assuming the job is a certainty, just be honest. Good leaders don't resent talent for leaving.

What did you say when initially asked? Might need to own up to it, especially if you dont want to burn a bridge

I left him on read until a half hour ago because I didn't know what to say. I called my future employers and asked for their take. I asked to connect via call when he's available tho.

You've gotten the answers and have already updated, so I just have to ask, why on earth did your current employer get your security clearance info?

They reach out to all current and former employers to verify I'm telling the truth. I was told the chance they actually reach out was low just bc the government doesn't have the bandwidth. Turns out they did lol

You made the right call by coming clean. When clearances come up, there's only so much that can be done.
