Hired AE to be our CRO

My company is a series C. We have 5 AEs and 3 SDRs

i am a sales manager.

out of the blue management tells us they hired a new CRO to replace current VP of sales and he starts march 1

new CRO has been an AE for 15 years but now is going to become our CRO.

i have no words. Am I crazy or is this some funny BS?

best part is as a sales manager I had no insight into this, the current VP of Marketing did not interview him either and was not informed, only VPs of CS, Product, current sales, HR, and CEO (who doesn’t do much in regards to sales and is a former consultant)

any advice on how to navigate this?

I’ll post the same advice as last time, and since you clearly didn’t like the engagement you got you’ll probably ignore it to:

Do your job. Do it well. Maintain your political capital and let the next 3 quarters spell out the success or demise of this new hire. You can’t control what has already happened, so you worrying and spending cycles on this only hurts you.

Seems like a really small company to be at series C

They must not feel that you have the chops for it ? Did you have any clue this was coming?

Same thing I said last time: do your job, do it well, don't participate in drama, and let the fallout happen as it may.

For all you know, he'll be very good. If he's not, and it leads to bad outcomes - you have the ability to look for other work and report to someone you prefer, or maybe he'll be removed if it's that bad. Nobody knows yet.

Why are you butt hurt about this?
Were you thinking you'd be the new manager?

This guy has been an AE for 15 years. He either sucks (unlikely since he was made CRO), or was really fucking good at being an IC and decided it's time to lead

Hiring process feels a little odd, but other than that I don't see any issues. Keep your head down, do your job, and if there are problems then management will deal with it. If they don't...leave.
We all get bad bosses, hires we think are shit, etc etc. Welcome to life.

Having been in the position in question, I’d say the promotion was a result of genuine merit and unlikely a result of some conspiracy or blackmail scheme. How do you know he won’t be the best CRO you’ve ever seen? He may and he may not. Either way your scope hasn’t changed. Give the dude a shot. Close deals. Literally nothing bad can come from that.
