Not an important skill to own but very nice to have.

Just joined a new company, my entire AE team has a monthly outing (COVID permitting) with our VP sales.

I'm actually debating getting lessons.

I hear you! Lot of people in sales golf, including leadership there's been lots of outings at my place so it's a great idea to at a minimum be average so you can participate.

I got some lessons as my hand eye coordination is complete shit and I could barely hit the ball without whiffing or muffing the grass. haha.

If that's the case def get some lessons. just don't be the person that takes forever to take a shot or look for their ball in the woods.

Did you find that a few hours on the green with a pro made you comfortable enough on your own?

Yea I'll have to.

I'd rather be there and suck than miss the relationship building.

You should ! They say you can learn 90% in the first year of golfing lessons and you spend the rest of your life perfecting the 10%. Golf is all muscle memory so get some lessons so you can get the mechanics down and then just hit balls at a driving range on the weekends and get a putting strip for the living room .

I'm debating this same thing!  The whole company leadership golfs and I want to be able to hold my own.

It's more important to be able to handle crushing beers on the course than actually being able to hit the ball straight. Haha (but true).

Just be decent at one part of the game... for instance, practice putting in your living room, get pretty good at 6 - 8 foot puts, then you're set for a best ball type scenario. Everyone struggles with putting, so if you can be even half way decent at it you'll look great.

I'd argue that being at least a decent driver is crucial.  I am a great putter and mid game but my chipping and driving is horrible and it is very noticed.

As long as you aren't the worst - you should be fine.

Most people just need to get it on/near the fairway.

Has anyone had any luck getting tee time lately? I was going to try, but most golf courses have seemed to be packed.

I don't think anyone cares how you actually play, as long as you play quick, know when to pick up, and are respectful of the group (ie: no whining, self degradation, etc)

Spot on don’t look for your ball for 5 minutes, laugh it off get back in the cart say “I’ll drop by you” and chug your Transfusion

go to the range and hit your 7 iron flush, you can hang with that.

depends on who you sell to lol If C suite it's not a bad idea to be just good enough to lose miserably to your prospect

VP's and C-suite solely.

This was more of an internal exercise, but that's a great point...

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
I can't play and it hasn't impacted my career in the slightest.

Well fuck. I can do literally every sport but this one and it’s probably the only one I need.

These days it doesnt actually matter, instead of golfing now we have to work a table at an event, the actual golf part has seemed to die. But yes a great skill to have if yo u still get to wine and dine

Never been, sounds fun though! I agree it would be a nice skill to have. There is a decent amount of banter around it that I miss out on but I would not say it is critically important to be able to golf well let alone at all.

Golfing isn’t important at all, being an actual member at a private club is crucial.
