How to propose remote role at work?

Planning on moving across the country next summer. Mostly to be closer to family but also my partner's career after finishing their PhD.

I've held this job as an AE for a year and a half. I'm the second most senior and one of their best sellers. But it's only for in-office work, except one person who was forced to relocate outside the country.

My manager has mentioned they're considering hiring someone who can work west coast hours because we're on east coast time. I would be moving to west coast or mountain time.

When is the right time to propose I work remotely and west coast hours?

The PhD program should wrap up in May or so. We should know when we're moving by then - probably within the month.

What’s your relationship like with leadership?

I was i a similar position years ago and it worked out for me.

I was based in Austin, TX but covered the upper Midwest (IL, MN, WI). Was traveling 2-3 times a month for meetings and became a strain on me and my partner (at the time we had an infant son).

Soon found out we were expecting baby #2 and I knew the travel wasn’t sustainable.

I was tenured and performing well, so got my ducks in a row and went to my manager (whom I had a great relationship with). Told them that we were expecting, and that the level of travel would be really difficult when baby 2 arrived. My in-laws are based in territory and mentioned we wanted to move to be closer to them so they could help with the kids. Made the clear case that I moving to remote and being based in the territory would help me generate more pipeline, PLUS improve my mental wellbeing.

I said that if it wasn’t possible I understood, but that I’d probably have to find a new job where I could relocate.

Boss was incredibly supportive of the move, and advocated for it up the chain.

So, long story short, start socializing now and capitalize on how it’ll help the business.

Good call! I know lots of companies that would be in “that territory” so I could make some meetings now.

But that’s good to hear that it worked well for you. I have a good relationship with my boss and I think they would be very excited to not have to train someone for a remote role.

Do it now. Tell your boss that you think you should be the west coast person. Then go from there

Based on all I've read so far, I completely agree. You may have solved a potential headache for them. Win/win.

Exactly, get in the conversation and fix the problem before they come up with a less desirable option.

They’re workshopping it now.

How could they know you are the best play if you don’t tell them?

I would love to do it now. My only concern is that the plan to hire a west coast person isn’t set in stone. I’ve heard it brought up more like a “maybe in Q2 or much later in 2023” plan. Still worth it to bring to their attention now?

"I've solved that problem for you - I can get started on the territory now while I'm here, and at this point, we are planning to move right around summertime"

Well, maybe not those words, but yes, I'd bring it up. May is going to come quickly!

Yes! Ask and say that you are willing to be that guy.

If they say you cant work remote will you not move?

I would just ask them right now. let them know what you are thinking and why it would be a good idea.

I’m moving either way. They basically just know that my partners PhD will be done relatively soon and they think that we may move or stay.

If they are smart, they know you are a potential flight risk without considering remote.

I would let them know of my interest at the earliest but I would also share a deadline that I have in mind. Why miss something due to lack of communication?

Propose it now before they look for someone in the west coast, you could be saving them a bunch of risk and money.
