In Transition

Greetings all -

I am currently in transition from technical project / project management / operations roles as my primary. I was involved with find clients for a Start-Up that developed iOS/Android Apps for about 4 months. In addition, I found third party vendors/partners to assist with QA testing. I am looking for tips of the trade per se on what I need to transition into a remote sales role.

Appreciate any constructive feedback.

Was my first question. Matters much today.

I worked retail for a now defunct toy store for 5 years.

A far cry from procedural B2B anything. In the current hellscape of an environment, you're going to find it extremely challenging to find a pure sales role. Even with your creds, you're going to be viewed as entry level at best.

Yeah I understand that I would be entry level. I am willing to do that right now. Any suggestions?

First thing you gotta do, if you'd like continued engagement in the War Room, is upvote your replies if you find value. Upvotes pay commish in here. While its not the only reason we engage, it's certainly a big part of it.
After you've done that, feel free to post a redacted resume. We'll help you clean it up. Definitely the first piece.

Damn OC this sucks. Sounds like OP should be considered better but ain't. Sometimes this role flat out sucks.

You need to be able to compellingly communicate why you want to do sales to have anyone take you seriously given your lack of experience.

Fair, but if you are going to pursue this avenue you need to have that answer dialed in.

You will be asked this over and over as you interview. Hiring managers will look for people that both want to do this but have passion for it.

So again I askโ€ฆ. Why sales?

I once asked that question of an entry level candidate. Why here? Why sales? His answer โ€œbecause I saw your job post.โ€

I am here because I am investigating what my potential in sales may be and whether it is something I could succeed at doing! Joining this forum is the first step at showing my commitment to learning the trade.

That's a winner right there. King of the literal, and only addressing your initial question

Ok, straight up. Either the above answer, or this one. Who you hiring?

"Because I've always enjoyed the art of conversational influence. I'm an accomplished storyteller, and I'm never afraid to to bet on my own talent. I'm a product manager, with deep technical understanding, that loves to see a project through to completion, at any cost. I've established my own methodology for leading multiple stakeholders with different agendas to unanimous collaboration. My work day is typically 12 hours. While I honestly believe I can outthink 85% of my competitors, I always outwork the rest."

If I might say so myself, it doesn't come any better than what you get in here.

Can we get a reminder to check in on this in about 2 months to see where this guy is? He gets the process of when needs to be done (heโ€™s researching before prospecting) and itโ€™s a matter of followthrough.

To answer your question: you need to be willing yo accept rejection (lots of it) you need to be willing to work hard and start at a lower level lower paying tier. A BDR or SDR role is what you need to look for. It is how you get into sales. These days almost nobody gets directly into a closing role in sales. It takes ~1.5-2 yrs to get into a spot where you will be selling stuff and starting to see good money.
You also need to start applying to these roles to get into sales. Brush up that resume and give it a sales cleanup and put sales terminology and info in it.
It sounds like you were โ€˜finding clientsโ€™ at your last role, so maybe change your tone from โ€˜ I was a Pm and a tech project operations roleโ€™ and just say โ€˜ I was responsible for generating new business and getting new clients for the businessโ€™โ€ฆ. Half of sales is selling yourself and what you do or have done.
Start talking like a sales person and acting like one is my advice as step one.

I am used to rejection - been going on for almost a year now in looking for work for my next full time career...sure I have had side gigs to get by; however, I come from a tech side of the job market and that job market is super tough right now.
Would you say there are good tutorials on some of the networking sites on how to improve upon your sales persona? If so, are there any that you would advise as a starting point?

Donโ€™t invest a penny in these dumb sales programs or influencers. Also read a few sales books but donโ€™t base your whole selling strategies, persona, or style off of them. Watch few sales movies. Woof of wall streets and others. Best way is watching people at your next job selling.
As for getting a job. Just fix up your resume to sound more techish. When you apply make sure you follow up with recruiters of the job or BDR and SDR managers. Make sure you send them thank you notes asking next steps.
Just be confident and you will be good in sales. Apply like a mad man and make shit happen. You got this.
