Industries similar to tech sales

My entire 15 year career has been in tech sales. Since being laid off I’d like to consider the option of switching industries.

What I like: long strategic enterprise sales cycles, dealing with multiple stakeholders, c-suite engagements, customized bill of materials, $1M+ annual contracts etc.

What I don’t/wouldn’t like: lack of sophistication or commoditized solutions, high transaction volumes, building a business from ground up ie real estate agent, financial advisor.

Also, I have been very fortunate to have some solid earning years and I’m unsure if I am able to earn similarly outside of tech. Anybody switch industries or are outside tech that can comment id greatly appreciate it.

Companies that have national account divisions could be a good fit. They typically will call on large corporations like Walmart, McDonald’s, etc. (doesn’t have to be retail just the initial examples I thought of).

Would you consider tech-adjacent? For example, the large SIs and consultancies that partner with the large tech companies?

It’s an interesting idea. I come from big tech so I am familiar with SIs. I would need to meet with a few people to poll comp models to see if it makes sense. In addition things like RSUs are part of compensation at big tech and SIs typically bonus the partners, not sure about the AEs (outside of commission).

I know a few people who made the transition and have enjoyed it. We haven't discussed their comp, so I can't shed any light there. It's a way to keep those skills you already have acquired, plus should you change your mind and want back in, you're right there on the sidelines, with fresh perspective and potentially desirable additional insight.

you should look into service based industries like advertising/marketing companies or companies that sell reports/research like Gartner. Those are just the first that come to mind that.

That’s an interesting idea. Meaning working for Private Equity or as a business broker?
