I dont see a problem with going into an office a couple times per week personally. Offices aren't the most efficient places to work all the time, but they serve a purpose.

Yeah. They are a great place to hide the bodies inside the walls. Or lose your soul in a cubicle where Debby won't shut the F up next door.

That's just weird and unfair. How far of a commute would it be?
CRAG112

It would end up being closer to an hour and a half a day at least due to traffic. Especially end of day.

Then of course you have to factor in all the extra time to wake up and be ready just to leave and not be late.

F that.

I could be sipping coffee and building a prospect list at 6AM, calling everybody, and then do other shit.

Yeah f that. That's not fair.

I'm WFH. Previous role was a hybrid role like that and hell took me two days to recover from commuting to office twice a week. Usually an hour journey... Was anywhere between 1.5 -2 per direction thanks to traffic. No flexibility from them either to 1h early or 1h late.

Did this a bit when my in-town company got acquired and new (large) tech company "moved" us to their offices in SF. Over an hour on a good day. Got the approval to go hybrid almost immediately and went fully remote a couple of years later, and never looked back. That commute was a killer, what with getting ready to go in, etc.

I mean would be cool to have the option, but mandatory? SEE YA

That's exactly what the recruiter said. It was even worse that it wasn't stated at the start of the call, but at the end.

She told me it would be mandatory.

Meanwhile top performers, plenty of others don't live near an office and they have worked remote for a few years.

Why would I want to be punished?

My reply back will be like:
"Sorry sir, but since that wasn't clear enough on the job description when I applied, I'll have to rescind your offer unless this condition is removed which I didn't agree to".

I wouldnโ€™t mind having an office near enough to visit every now and then, but not daily. That would make me want to travel weekly.

I can work with negotiating and flexing if you are literally right near me and it takes minimal effort to get to where you are here and there.

But this idea that this shit is mandatory, or a requirement, but not across the board, or only in special occasions, or only applies to people with certain titles. Like GTFOH.

See, I wouldn't either IF the office was nearby. I live in suburbia, but have had lighting strike twice, finding tech companies that I loved (in both cases) that were actually based in my small town. Going into the office was not an issue at all. In fact, I used to ride my bicycle to the first one, which was fantastic. With the second one, the job moved 90 minutes away each direction, and suddenly being in that office didn't seem so attractive. Plus it's expensive. Either you're paying for transit or you're paying tolls and parking. Add that to the hours worked, and it's not so wonderful.

Sorry I didnโ€™t clarify, if it is 30 minutes by public transit or parking is provided I have no issue with in office. If itโ€™s advertised remote then they spring the hybrid thing and youโ€™re 1.5 hours in commute time then I have an issue

It should be in the job description.
Besides this WFH vs Hybrid, is everything else positive about the company, your direct manager, offer and candidate experience?

If so, can you talk to the hiring manager and put together a plan for you to be 100% WFH in the future?

Most companies are Hybrid now, and especially want new employees in the office on a regular basis to accelerate learning, onboarding and culture.
If there are other things you don't like about the company, then just walk away.
