Job Hunting Before A Planned Vacation

Should you be job hunting when you have a planned 2-week vacation in the next 90 days?

I have a planned 2-week vacation at the beginning of August, but I am also looking for a new gig. My current job is not in danger, and I have flexibility where I am at; however, there are a lot of internal issues that have been really irritating me for some time now, and I want to move up and start making more money and gaining valuable experience. I feel stuck where I am and limited in my potential.

I want to find a better gig, but with my vacation on the horizon, would it be okay to start looking now, or should I wait? I'm curious about what employers think if you tell them you have a vacation coming up shortly after being hired.

If you are unhappy in your current role and recruiters are reaching out or you see a great company hiring, GO FOR IT!

99% of hiring managers will understand you have a vacation planned and will let you have the time off. The other 1%, you didn't want to work for anyway!

Who knows the new role might pay a lot better allowing you to upgrade to first class on the vaca?!

What they said. I did this once. Had a family vacation already scheduled and changed jobs. Hiring manager was cool with it, I was just honest and told him about it before officially hired and they still wanted to hire me.

I mean you can negotiate your start date to begin after your vacation. In reality even if you applied and got accepted today after paperwork, interviews, more interviews, negotiation , it will take weeks regardless.

If you want to start looking, look.

That is true, the process will take at least a month minimum from now before I can find something.

My current employer hired me on knowing I had a one week vacation coming up the week directly after my start date. I'm going on one year now and love my job.

Feel like I'm always echoing @Kosta_Konfucius(you're quick on the draw, pardner) but he's right in saying you don't want to work for someone who wouldn't be understanding of that.

Don’t let a vacation put off the hunt. Always do what you have to do.

Don't let that slow you down! It's definitely something to be open about during interviews but I've never seen it be a blocker if the company wants to hire you. I had a colleague who took a pre-planned week vacation the week after he started & they didn't even make him use any of his vacation days. Probably not the norm lol but could be worth the ask

Nothing wrong with looking now. If the search starts getting serious with a company just let them know. Should be a non issue. If they care about you being gone for 2 weeks it's a sign to me they are running a churn and burn sales org and you don't want to be there anyway.

Agree with the consensus here. There are no guarantees a company you find will be ready to take you on until you're back anyway. Start your search, and enjoy your trip!

No issue at all. Discuss after receiving offer and a start date. Just be honest.

There's nothing wrong with taking time off after starting a new job. Just make sure to let them know.

I don't know about you, but I get a new job every couple of years. So if I didn't take vacation in the first 90 days at a new job, I'd pretty much never take vacation.

I would enjoy my vacation first for sure, guess you'll still have a plenty of time to search afterwards,as staying for a couple of months more even if it ain't the best it ain't that terrible.
As I believe you've been working there for at least a couple of years or months already, so only 2 or 3 months extra won't hurt.
Hope you'll enjoy your vacation!

Dude hell yeah. Just b/c you are looking now doesn't mean anything will come to fruition now.

Do you work remotely or at the office? Would you quit your job if you had to go to the office full time? I’d quit immediately. Well as soon as I found another job 😂. Currently, I’m working from home I go to the office once in a while. I can work from any country. I went to the beach for 3 weeks and just took two days off to recover from a festival.
