Late Start in a Remote Role

I hope everyone is having a great start to their day, even if it's a little later than usual (like in my case). Being sick really put a damper on things, but I'm ready to get back in the game.

Days like today make me curious on the typical protocol of being "late" in a remote role.

I would assume most managers are typically very busy and do not have the time to check if the entire team is online.

But I have to ask the non ICs here: how do you handle it when you notice an employee not online during work hours? Do you ping them to make sure they're at the desk, do you typically never notice/not care, or do you just send passive aggressive vibes?

Also, as a manager would you appreciate a ping, saying sorry about the late start?

Even after 2 years of being fully remote, I never know how to handle this. I know I should have sent a Teams message saying I am sick, but after hitting snooze, there was nothing waking me up.

Sick is sick. If I'm not feeling well and I may need to work less on a specific day, I'd reach out to my manager so that s/he's aware of the situation.
Do you have specific hours you're expected to be working? 8-5? 9-6? In my case, it's 8 hours, but I'm one of the few in my time zone, so I start earlier than most out here and end earlier as well, but I'm also often splitting my day up with an early start and then a later finish. I don't know of anybody monitoring my online/available icons and honestly, half the time, Teams has my status incorrect anyway.

Exactly. Work when you're supposed to. If you have a large start then work late to make it up. We are adults here. Act like it.

No set expectation for start time which is super nice. But I was always curious what a manager would think if you are logged off an hour past the normal time.

Well, if you're in a good place with your manager, explaining the situation is the best path. That said, at this point, if there's been no question about it, then I wouldn't worry overmuch.
In the future, if you know you're not feeling well, you can ping your manager up front and let them know you're sick and that you might end up having to have an early stop to your day as a result. Communicate what's up as much as you can. The relationship should grow to where your manager trusts that you're getting your work done.

Honestly I think you think about it more than any manager/company does

As an IC, it definitely depends on the job and have had a few at this point with hybrid or fully remote. Like with most micromanagement, it seems the lower on the totem pole you are (and thus probably your manager), the more likely and quicker you'll get a ping asking where you're at/what you're up to.
I have a feeling your manager would appreciate the ping just to keep them in the loop. That being said, no expected start time is nice to have and seems more likely to generate a "is everything alright?" message than "where you at?"

If there is no expectation then….your good. If i ever got a message from a boss asking if i was working I’d be so annoyed. If im taking a full day off because im sick I’ll put it in the slack channel and message my boss. But besides that. Nothing

remote work -> results (if results are good nobody cares how you did it or what time you started)

Agreed! Trust is a huuuge factor in remote work & something we start looking at even in the interview process. If you're getting your work done & keeping your manager up to speed on everything, then you're solid. If you break their trust & make it a habit of constantly being offline during working hours, then that's another conversation

Exactly! Everybody knows I take a 1hour lunch break every day. They do not care since they know and trust me when it comes to my results and work ethic.
