Management wants feedback on the new progression plan for SDR's - I think it's horrible?

Hey team,

So we just announced via our monthly all hands our new progression plans for new SDR's that join the org, fortunately i'm one of the lucky few that don't have to worry about this.

Essentially the pathway before was pretty vague but you hit your numbers for a year and if you got lucky you got made SMB AE. Pretty simple stuff.

The new system has you 6 months as an "associate SDR" (No calling, just emails and updating CRM" followed by 1 year of inbound and then 1 year of outbound then you can finally move to another department.

2.5 years in the Sales development Org? Is there a nice way for me to say to management I think they are absolutely insane if anyone would actually stick that out?

I have stopped recommending friends join my company now because of that, I wouldn't want anyone to have to go 2.5 years as an SDR yet alone 6 months just to get on the goddamn phone.

I'm gonna stay quiet on this, but if anyone has an opinion on this i'm open to hearing, or would you provide candid feedback?

Yeah that's pretty insane. Why can't you approach them about this? SDRs are already hard to find, I can't imagine why anyone would want to work there after hearing that

I'm just about to hit one year and I'm now vesting shares, I'm disappointed in that move but don't want to rock theย  boat as I'm personally in a good positionย

I feel that. I don't think saying that you have concerns with this plan would rock the boat too much. Just depends on how you approach it.

If you told me it would be almost 3 years before I can even attempt to make the jump to AE, I would tell you to kick rocks.ย

That's actually horrible and I would also not speak much because it's gonna be useless

What an awful idea. Throw them on the phones after a week. Let them fall on their face. And yeah, 2.5 years before any true upward movement?! Nah

putting aside the ridiculous 2.5 years portion before a person can get promoted elsewhere, which is stupid. who tf thought it was a good idea to have the SDR be a glorified admin???

if anything, not allowing the SDR to call for 6 months will often create major phone anxieties since they will only have watched and not accomplished for half a year.

They asked for feedback.ย  Was that from you, the whole team, the org?ย  ย And what's the nature of the feedback?ย  Reply email, anonymous poll, face to face?

Since they asked, f you are comfortable responding with a polite response along these lines:ย  "this seems like an overly long time, and I'd be concerned that SDRs are being held back and we may lose good ones", you might want to send that along.ย  If they ask for details, you can let them know that you found that most organizations didn't have such a long progression and that the SDRs were beginning their calls much sooner.

good luck having people sit in the SDR org for 2.5 years. This is ludicrous.

IMO- no shorter than 1 year, no longer than 2 years in SDR/BDR before AE (unless they are one of those sociopaths who want to stay in sdr land forever )
