NDA during interview process?

Savages,

Just finished up a first-round interview with a hiring manager. A few things during this interview seemed peculiar to me.

Everything seemed pretty standard, and it was a good conversation, not just some scripted BS I sometimes see.

The interview was scheduled for 30 minutes, but we went over for another 10-15 minutes. Not sure if it's just me on this, but I generally view this as a good sign.

At no point where there was time for me to ask questions about the org aside from understanding the next steps. The hiring manager wanted me to add a list of enterprise logos I have sold into in my follow-up email.

Now it looks like I will have to sign an NDA before speaking to their VP. While I understand the use of one, I have never experienced anything like this during an interview process.

Has anyone else experienced this before? Any words of wisdom?

As other comments seems unusual but hey what does it matter? NDA isnt exactly going to change your life is it, the job might though.

I’ve had to sign NDA in the interview process before. Some companies are paranoid about their info.

For me, fairly common to sign, and I also ask those candidates that go to the second round of interviews to sign one as well.

WoW - read it, sign it and follow what is incorporated in it.

Good luck with your process.

It won't hurt to sign, just make sure you read the document and retain a copy.

Yes not too concerned, just found it odd since I've never heard that before.

I haven`t experienced this personally, but here`s an idea:
Maybe the company you`re interviewing for is about to launch a new product and they want to keep their cards close to their chest?

Also, since the interview went a bit longer for you, and they want you to sign an NDA, seems like you`ve made it to the top of their list :)

This was my thought too. I would still follow through with it.

That’s a bit strange but not I will care about much. Curious why didn’t the hiring manager write it down during the interview process?

Sign it. No big deal.

I'm more worried about having to share previous logos I sold into. What will they do with that list? And if they don't hire you, will they call those people up?

seems a bit strange. Normally they should be able to have an interview with you without uncovering important info. However, maybe they are planning a big move and need the person in that role to be up to speed when they hire them.

Depends on the company and what the role is. If it’s for products that are already on market/commodity then seems silly
If it’s a new product or a role that handles something new then it could be warranted

I've had to sign a couple of NDA's during an interview before which I didn't think was abnormal.

They may want to talk specifics of the company and want to protect their interests. It's not entirely out of left field but not a common ask.

NDA also opens the door for you to ask more hard-hitting questions about revenue. I've even sometimes offered to sign an NDA to get a glimpse of what the sales dashboard looks like (Attainment, Growth, Reps metrics etc etc)

Sometimes you may take it as a good sign as it may tell you that you're getting to the hiring process seriously and about to be accepted and would be informed about info may be the others that won't be accepted wouldn't.

That's why they let you sign it to get themselves secured as if you actually became already an employee, that's how I can see it!!

I had to sign one once for a startup. I wasn't concerned about it.

I’ve signed a few NDAs when interviewing for Director+ roles. The data and detail you gain in that process could be leaked and shared with competitors and it totally makes sense why they have you sign.

Here in Brazil, it's pretty normal to see huge companies asking for NDA in the last steps of the hiring process. I would say that this is good for you because you can ask mostly everything about the company (revenue, ticket, how the funnel works, who is the top performer, and what are his numbers...)
You just gotta be careful because these NDA contracts always come with huge fines and if they are interviewing a lot of people, is actually impossible for them to know who leaked the information.
