Negotiating Base Salary

Closing 2 interview processes and have received 2 offers (One is a B2B education company and the other is a company the works with businesses looking to franchise).

The B2B education company is offering a base salary 2x that of the franchising company (but commissions aren't that hot with the B2B education company). While both companies are attractive to me and I'd enjoy the work of both, I'm more inclined to take the offer of the franchising company.

Should I use the offer from the B2B education company to negatioate a higher base with the franchising place? and what would be the best way to do that so that they don't rescind my offer?

(The franchising place also mentioned in the interviews that the base salary isn't negotiable...not sure if that matters)

€€€ thanks €€€

As someone who knows lots of independent business owners…I don’t know any that want to franchise.

What kind of businesses would you be approaching? I feel like the education offer would give you clear runway and a proven market. The franchising would maybe run j to some roadblocks with the hardening and near frozen funding market.

If you truly want to go franchising, yes, leverage the higher offer and your story to gain movement on the base.

The other wrinkle is that I’m in Spain so would be working with the local market here. This company has a proven track record here in Spain as there’s a lot of people investing in franchising (it also has been killing it in Argentina for the last 20years).
They approach places like food service, fitness, service, etc

Stay away from the franchising. You don’t want to be working with wannabe small business owners.

Curious, is this from your experience In the franchising world?

Based on what I read you already know where you want to work. It doesn’t harm asking what you are expecting vs what you are already getting but I would be soft with my ask without any expectations as they already indicated what’s in their mind.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Going in with this mindset and see what I can get out of it. Thanks

Why are you more inclined to take the franchising offer?

I like the work that I’d be doing with them…Meeting with business owners to create a plan to franchise their business. (This company is kind of a mix between B2B / B2C).
People probably would think I’m crazy to take a base salary that’s 1/2 of the other, but that’s my gut feeling.

Nah not crazy just want to be sure we understand the motivation.

What’s the sales cycle like? How long will it take to make the base of the education job? Are there reps hitting quota at the franchise job?

Regarding salary negotiations, since these are totally different verticals, maybe transparency is best.

“Hey Franchise hiring manager,

I’m honored by the offer and can see myself helping grow this business. I’m certainly excited about the opportunity.

Regarding the salary, can we discuss a bit further? I have received another offer with a higher base salary, nearly 2x. I’d love to chat more about flexibility of the compensation.”

The commission is payed out once a franchising contract is payed out (sales cycle varying between 1-3 months depending on ticket size). The team is small in Spain, but it has a track record of success and people closing deals, especially after ramp-up. I’m terms of % hitting quota I’m not sure.

I love the blurb to say to the franchising hiring manager.

It doesn't harm you at all to be transparent in the hiring process. Most companies are expecting you to be interviewing elsewhere.

I've always used another offer that's on the table to negotiate with the company I really want to work for, and it's never bitten me in the ass. I wouldn't expect the franchising company to be able to match the base of the education company if it's 2x, but they'll probably be able to come up a little bit if they really want you.

That’s what I was thinking as well. They said “it’s non-negotiable” , but showing another offer should hopefully inspire them to move it up a little.

When would you say is a good point to stop pushing for more base salary (or whatever other benefit for that matter)?

You need firstly to ask for the same base the B2B education company is offering ,if it was approved ,then it's Fine NP.

However, if it was declined you could definitely could definitely use theB2Boffer to negotiate a higher base with the franchising place!

Hard to 2x your salary with commission depending on role but if that's possible worth considering the job paying less

none of us know the market that you are in. if Franchising is a strong market there, then it becomes a better opportunity.
when it comes to salary vs. commission (guarantee vs. upside), the real questions is this: do you believe enough in your own ability to sell that you would pick a lower salary and bet on yourself to out earn that higher salary job?

I have friends who will not take a salary. they only take contract / 1099 positions where they only get paid on their results. they ask for high percentages and bet on their ability to achieve. you can ask a lot of questions about the success rates, growth history, number of new franchises pre month, etc. get the data, analyze the numbers, and determine where you can maximize your return of effort.

Great points about knowing your own abilities and whether it’s worth the risk to bet on yourself to out-earn the lower base position. Things to think about. Thanks!
