Negotiating Tip

I got this piece of advice from a peer over coffee, and now I'm in this contemplative mode, thinking about how to ace the post-offer negotiation game. Don't just haggle over the bucks – show you're pumped about the role too.

The advice is to ask the hiring manager at the end of the call when negotiating, "I am extremely excited about this opportunity, and curious if you have any advice on what I can be doing to ramp up the weeks leading up to my potential first day in the role?"

Examples of this: you're asking for suggestions on what books/articles read, which webinars to catch, or even nudging for a mentor before you even start.

It's like saying, "Hey, I'm not just here for the paycheck; I wanna do extremely well for Day 1!" This is way to signal your loyalty while you're still haggling salary.

But curious to hear your thoughts on this. Is this showing the cards that you are going to accept so less likely to get an increase or is this a way to break the tension and also make a great impression before starting your role?

I love the comment. In the end it comes down to asking for the role, just like you ask for the job or PO, but I like the idea of showing the interest of coming in prepared immediately.

I would tweak this a bit.

I would ask about conferences, trade shows, etc. the company is planning on attending so you can start reaching out to your network NOW, rather than later. If they have a big conference two weeks after you start, how baller is it to already have 3-4 meetings set up for it the day you start!

And if you ask about books, etc. I would lean toward industry-specific requests rather than "your favorite sales book".

Don't get too deep in your thoughts. You still need to close the deal. They need to know you actually do want to work there, ya know?

Agreed. This is a good way to show that without seeming desperate/overly excited. Just appropriately fired up

I feel like adding on that question puts a positive ending on the at times stressful call. Shows you are excited about the role and how its worth fighting for the additional $$ when HR will push back

Nice approach. How they answer it will also give you some insight into how they view you as a candidate as well.

I don't think this makes you less likely to get an increase in any way, there's no hiring manager that would say this person asked to ramp fast, let's NOT offer them or negotiate with them.

I always ask that question before i get the offer :D

I got this tip that you should act as if it's a done deal and you're thinking about practicalities.
Like selling a car and asking at the end of the presentation which color you should write rhe contract up for :D

Ask about their top performers... what do they do that separates them from the rest.
