PE / VC Firm engagement (from a job hunting perspective)

In the past year I have been contacted a couple times by search firms looking a for a CRO on behalf of a PE/VC firm. Both times, despite them reaching out to me, I have been passed up. The reason - they are going with a PE/VC-backed person.

So my question, and there are probably few on here who can answer, how do I engage with these PE/VC firms? How do I get known by them? The first company hired a guy who is, at best, equally as qualified as myself. The second company is still in the selection/interview process.

Perhaps @sahil could shed light PE/VC firm engagement for high level roles?

EDIT: These are roles with companies are being backed by the PE/VC firms, not with those firms themselves.

The best way to become VC backed is to network with VCs and VC Firms. Go to their office hours. Their happy hours. Their houses. Kids soccer games…on only do the first two.

Meet the folks who back the companies you would want to work for and develop a relationship. Offer advisory work to some is their early stage companies. Give them insight into some mid and late stage assets and where you’d see opportunities for them. Hell, toss them a lead that fits their investment thesis.

You need to engage them at the human level to get into their network. That way when the next opportunity comes up they will think of you first.

Oh, and join boards in non-voting capacities when you can.

My advice, not someone from a PE/VC background, is to message those who have a similar background who did make the switch to a CRO at a PE company. Maybe there is something those individuals were looking into that helped them stand out in the interview. It might even be a way to speak the VC language better.

But most importantly, this provides a list of companies that are willing to hire someone with your background. This might not get you a CRO role, since there is someone else in the role currently, but maybe another high-level leadership role.

It’s about who you know more often than not. If you get the chance to network in this area, don’t pass up the opportunity
