Quota announced mid-quarter. Is this normal?

So 3 weeks into the beginning of our fiscal year, our new quarterly quota was announced. We all knew quotas we're going to increase going into the new year, but the fact that they announced it essentially one month into the quarter, it felt like they were goalposting us.

Is this something that's normal in sales, or is this fucked up?

No marketing, mayo isn't an MQL
Now I ain't saying that doesn't feel like a violation, but it depends.

Is this out if place for your org? Was it a huge jump?

I would be less shocked if this is a series A startup that is pulling numbers from its ass Vs late stage etc.

Shit has happened to me in the past at early stage startups.

Pretty normal at my last company. 3 weeks was nothing tbh. At my current company VP of sales told us we had a "quota enrichment" ... which meant he raised it a couple weeks into Q3.

Unfortunately it isn’t uncommon and it’s probably not goalposting. Usually operations has to go through several calculations and then get HR approvals for the new quotas. It’s likely they had the numbers at the beginning of the quarter but needed to finalize the language for the new quotas and comp plans.

Believe it or not, its more common than you would think.  Most companies/leaders can't get out of their own way and put 500 cooks in the kitchen when it comes to compensation. If your company is PE or VC funded it adds another layer of insight/buy-in needed.  I honestly don't think its purposefully done, but just a function of poor planning/time management to get them out early in Q/year.

This happened to us twice last year. We were all crushing quota during the covid lockdown. Our expectation used to be 12 meetings per month and they raised it twice until it was 16 meetings per month. Nobody told us either, we had to figure it out when our bonuses weren't as high.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
I've seen this happen with annual quotas. I didn't have my annual quota come until late February or similar on more than one occasion. It's bullshit but there is absolutely nothing you can do about it and leadership doesn't care.

I feel like I am hearing this more often than not....I don't think it is normally goalposting but more of a lack of organization and agreement on numbers between all parties in the company.  Just bring in revenue and hope its enough as opposed to letting it bother you.
