Quota tripled for 2023.... shitty Pre Series A startup

After scraping by and barely hitting quota this year, CRO told me today my quota will be tripled next year.

*Me thinking to myself* - After having my commission cut in half back in January and me barely making $50k this year, I am no longer surprised anymore...

Maybe I'm just going crazy. After all, my CRO told me "don't worry maromillion, I know you can do it! It will be a piece of cake for you."

*Me thinking to myself* - Okay so next year I'll have the same quota as the two other reps on the team that have been in sales for decades. While I've only been in sales for 2 years. Wait....stop overthinking. You're being promoted to fucking Enterprise AE in only 2 years, lets GOOOO... Wait out of our team of 5 reps, didn't one of them get PIP'd out and another jumped ship?? Does anyone even hit quota consistently??

CRO: "Hey, if we hit our stretch goal for 2022, you can get a nice raise"...

*Me thinking to myself* - Wow that sounds nice. Wait... me getting a raise depends on my team hitting their own quota, not me hitting own? Wait.... is hitting this new quota even realistic? Maybe...if I work from dust till dawn....7 days a week... eat, sleep, and breathe closing.. Wait.... I'm overthinking, they at least will provide training. I mean I'm going from SMB all the way to Mid-Market and Enterprise.

*Remembers CRO doesn't know what training is and expects me to be a natural Mid Market AE SAINT of LEGEND, MASTER CLOSER. GLENGARY ROSS JR.*

*Now has till January to become self-made GOD of full cycle Enterprise AE at a startup with shitty comp & a delusional CRO*

Should I stay and somehow learn to close larger deals or jump off the drowning ship?

You hit quota and you made $50k OTE? For Enterprise AE? Are you based in the US?

Based on the other concerns you listed, I would dust off the resume. I would not just take the first offer you get, be picky. Use tools like RepVue and back channel to former reps.

Highly recommend filling out the jobs profile here and switching to โ€œactively lookingโ€ and โ€œopen to new opportunitiesโ€

The grass isnโ€™t always greener, but sometimes it is

Commission got cut back in January. Originally it was around $80k OTE for a full cycle SMB AE role, which was amazing since I was a junior in college at the time.

I am in USA but low ACV, hence full cycle instead of having an SDR.

My CRO never mentioned a โ€œpromotionโ€, all he said was quota is now increased to โ€œxyzโ€. So now my quota is the same as the other two reps who are Enterprise AEs.

Our quota is separate from our commission payouts. A deal is counted for quota when agreement is signed. In order to get paid, they have to be fully onboarded and active. Our CS team is outsourced so that means I have to be an AM or I will never get paid for that deal.

Iโ€™ve never turned off my LinkedIn recruiter signal; l entertain 100% of the conversations that interest me and when Iโ€™m unhappy in a role I have the conversations that donโ€™t interest me to sharpen my skills.

That said, if youโ€˜ve been here since College it sounds like you might not have experienced a real (read: somewhat decent) comp structure. If I were in your shoes Iโ€™d be leveraging my current role to look for the next step along my journey. Seems you may have outgrown this place.

CROs are all about pushing you to sell more. Get him on calls that are qualified to help with the exec connections, and he will be willing to handhold a deal or two for you. Remember, his number is based on you hitting yours.

With that in mind, I would also be looking to jump ship.

Definitely start looking, but don't walk out this door until you have something in hand. It doesn't hurt to look.

Turn on that "open to opportunities" on LI as UserNotFound recommends, and good luck to you.

Turn on "open to opportunities" while still employed??? Sounds like an easy way to get on leadership's bad side.

They don't see it, you know.

Also, you really should be looking. They aren't paying you enough and keep messing with your comp. Messing with your money is not good leadership.

You can do it where only recruiters can see since it shows up if you have LinkedIn Recruiter. Recruiters at your own company wont be able to see you as open to new opportunities, just ones who work somewhere else.

You're young so this is a good learning experience for you.

They up'd quota because they need to look for investors. OR they want to trim the sales team and need "non-performance" as a reason.

I wouldn't say its a 100% sinking ship, but the signs are there. I'd ride it out as a paid job search.

And whatโ€™s your average deal size and sales cycle?

Mid-Market AE
Mid-Market:

Deal Sizes: $1188 per location
Quota: 35 locations a month/420 locations annually
Sales Cycle: 1-3 months depending on size

It is hard to determine average deal sizes as I could be prospecting with a 30-store chain, and they could decide to try on 5 locations to begin. This means I'd need to bring on 7 chains that month.

My pipeline has mostly been SMB, so not sure about the average deal sizes of Mid-Market. Our CRM isn't organized enough, and neither is our leadership; so I'll have to wait a few quarters to check my own deal sizes.

I won't have an SDR so there is I'll have to prospect a percentage of new business myself to fill my pipeline.

For a year and a half I did SMB which was extremely transactional:

Deal Size: $1188 per location
Quota: 12 locations
Sales Cycle: 1 hour to 45 days
Average deal size: $1188

@maromillionBe proactive with your future. I personally have done the coast out until PIP then jump ship and frankly, I only did so because I was being lazy.

I wasted months and months on a job that was a dead-end. During those months, I let several great opportunities go by without even trying to get my name in the ring. In short, it was a waste! I was a spectator in my own life.

Instead of spectating like I did, you gotta go out and grab the bull of life by the balls and say, "Mr. Bull, you're going to help me get a better job, and I won't take any of your darn nonsense" and then when you're slaying it and making real money in a couple more months you'll get to look back at the great advice that CorporateStiff gave you (among other folks on this here god-send of a platform) and you'll think long and hard about what gift to get me for Christmas next year.

I see a lot of red flags. I think itโ€™s always good to keep the open to work on even if youโ€™re happy. I highly recommend always knowing what youโ€™re worth and taking recruiter calls. You should also try to know what it is youโ€™d leave or are looking for. That will help you evaluate opportunities that come along. In the meantime do you best to hit your numbers until something better comes along.

If my quota tripled, I would need to see my OTE and base get a massive adjustment.
I would be looking around hardcore. I imagine your whole team is too.

Your second sentence alone would be enough that I would leave.

See whats out there while also crushing and see if you can possibly hit any numbers. A few whales can change your psyche. I had my quota tripled but also am in my largest deal that is now 50% of my tripled quota, so i went from im outta here to well, lets see what happens. Seems like the CRO would be gone before you too. RIde it out while building pipe and interviewing. If something great comes along take it, easier to get a job while you have one. If you do hit your numbers and that CRO doesnt give you what he said egg his house and then quit or quit then egg, less likely to be a suspect if you TP and egg his house prior to resigning

Get out ASAP! This is a toxic environment and red flags all over the place. This will only affect your mental health and well being. Culture for me is #1 and they way the company appreciates their employees.

If you quit you'll learn nothing. If you wanted easy quota, go work at a car dealership.

The CRO and team is trying to see what you are made of. Show them.

Do it, and then leave them in the fucking dust. Prove their decisions were foolish in hindsight and make them pay.

But don't quit or worry yourself with outcome.
