My story:


2nd yr BDR here with OTE 60k


Did 260% of FY22 target (capped at 300%)


Now, FY23 targets increased significantly. From 5mil to 25


Will need to do 75mil in pipe, to hit cap (300%)


Individual targets shared publicly already.


Initial impression: this increase is standard across the team.


Informed "not to worry" by Manny - who doesnt micro manage and genuinely strives for team to win


What say yee o' top performers: How does one win here?


(Willing to accept that winning might not be max comp)


Thoughts:


a) try hunt top accounts only (increasing min deal value from 100k to 1mil)

b) try renegotiate comp

c) push back as a team

d) just do it

e) aim for wage hike by becoming Senior - taking management route

f) all of the above

g) something else

totally agree with this. I would 100% demand an explanation of WHY they have risen quota so much, and how they expect the team to hit these numbers. i think that is totally fair.

Someone in your org is smoking crack.

Not sure where you live, but this might even be setting you up for unfair or constructive dismissal. Your new quota absolutely unobtainable without significant new sales support from the company and a far cry from what you were initially hired to do.

I won't even go into how your original rate is abusive, but this is so much worse.

Rates will vary, but it looked like you were getting less than 1% comp.

I assumed 50/50 salary/commish with OTE of $60k, meaning 30K is OTE commish for 5m in sales, so 0.6%.

If your OTE stays the same under the new quote then you drop to like 0.01%.

Unless my math is wrong.

Exactly! I could (maybe) see 200% increase. CJ would probably beat that again...but 500% sounds punitive.

And across the board? Sounds like a little upper level management disconnect.

We've yet to lockstep with Sales and Marketing regarding account targeting and its 20 days into Quarter. Lots of mgmt shifting occuring too. The number was given based on conversion rates (pipe to close). Do you think I should jump a few levels up to understand?

I would find that incredibly frustrating and demotivating. I personally would find that a sign of decay and prioritization in company metrics and I would be worried about the next 18 months of company health since they are obviously trying to force attrition and do a late-stage funding round off crap metrics (if Manny is who I think they are and this is Outreach especially - there's no IPO in the next year and that's gonna hurt since they spend money like freaking whoa).

I chugged some coffee and thought about it from your shoes since you didn't list leaving as an option - and in order I would do c (push back first as an organized team effort). Then if that doesn't work, I would start with a (go elephant hunting and pad metrics while keeping your head down) and if possible, e (get promoted, though it doesn't really solve the insane quota probs and kind of compounds it, at least you could leverage the title after the jenga tower falls).

Something else - you didn't put down "look for another position" which tells me you aren't considering that as an option for some reason. Do you otherwise really like this job? Because I would start looking externally to see what else is out there, and give myself other options. I'm also curious why you put management rather than AE, which is often the next step after BDR.

500% increase is beyond reason. Even if you blew your quota attainment out of the water... they (RevOps/Finance) should factor in historicals and be aligned with that type of output. 500% tells me there are other variables at play.

User/contract acquisition velocity, user churn/retention issues on the largest rev contributing accounts, funding setbacks, new competitive product market, # of reps that were way over their quota. These are some things I've seen in the past. It's not a clear representation of what's happening at your shop. However, a 500% increase without an explanation to justify that increase is SUPER sketchy. It's basically letting the sales department know... no one meets the target unless we start killing whales.

Was thinking to gauge our LTV:CAC, as well as quota attainment but are great help. As alsohave heard freezing spends from the large accounts.

Follow the process, do your best and call it a reset year.

That is what most of our sales staff is doing.

Our quotas were based on growth on inflated numbers from last year where everyone had oodles of government money and were stuck with home improvement instead of travel.

Honestly, it is a total joke how they came up with these quotas. I am one year in with very little repeat business or self gen ability but since I was number one my first year, I got stuck with the big boys quota. #punishsuccess

I am making about 20% less this year.

D**k move, no doubt.

Here`s an equally **** move you can make: How about this, you tell your manager on your next 1on1 you`ve gotten an offer that will see your base AND ote x2. Tell him you`ve ignored offers like these before, but with recent changes, you feel like it might be time to move on. You overachieved year 1, I`m sure they`ll be open to re-negotiate your compensation.
