SaaS vs. Professional Services?

Considering new opportunities in the SaaS and Professional Services space (I come from SaaS background).

Needing some guidance on things to consider.

Would moving to Pro Services sales wise or would it derail a SaaS sales career path?

What are pros and cons to each?

Thanks all!

Better margins in SaaS. Better margins means more commission.

Always find high margin business to sell from and ideally to.

Tank is right about the margins.
Also, professional services are dependent on your team doing the work. And you're often paid out when the work is done, invoiced, and paid. So the commission on that $50K deal might take 6 months or more to actually reach you.

I pivoted from SaaS to Professional Services 2 years ago and massively regret it. Its been a lot more detrimental to my current job search than I thought it would be. The sales process is actually not that different, but for some reason hiring managers think its totally unrelated. Ive done SaaS sales and Pro Serv sales, the professional services sale is more difficult, and has higher churn than SaaS ever did for me.

Why not a gig that pairs a tech platform WITH professional services management.
Sounds like a great post-sales fit.

This could be interesting, I’m looking at an org right now that combines both

Big SaaS require pro services for implementation so I don’t think selling services will hurt your career.

the pro serv wont hurt your saas career if its tech related

Margins, Margins, Margins my friend, selling pro services unless you are performing the services is often a painful volume game. SAAS sales as rough as it can be is where the $$ is at.
