Sales Training Director/SDR Manager internal promotion

I'm about to be promoted to a sales training director/inside sales manager here soon. We just restructured our AE comp model to be fairly lucrative..which was the job I am currently working. I anticipate a slightly lower OTE with the new gig.

The AEs OTE at plan is about $150k, $60k salary + monthly revenue percentage commission + quarterly quota bonuses.

HOWEVER!! How can I ensure that a title promotion is not an income demotion? What are some thoughts on structure for a gig like this?

Any directors/managers/sales trainers out there willing to shed light on your comp package??

Personally, I wouldn't go into training if you think there is still a chance you would want to sell again. It's hard to go back.

care to elaborate? are you hinting that training is/isn't a good gig? or just a role that can cause your sales skills to slip

It's not that it's not a bad gig, but once you become a trainer you lose selling relevance. Your last skill level is where your skills are frozen, and the longer you stay in training the longer you fall behind the rest of your peers/new folks in the gigs.

If you are making less than $60k in base as a manager/leader then you are getting fucked. I wouldn't take that role in a million.

Yeah -- you're making $60K base and taking a "promotion" that includes a pay cut and losing out on commission?ย

I don't know if you've thought this through...

it won't be a paycut salary-wise. the details haven't been worked out. i'm expecting the base to increase, but want to ensure the OTE isn't less than the OTE for the AEs..make sense?

salary would increase. worried the OTE would be less than the AE OTE. want to ensure that doesn't happen. no freaking way am i taking less salary...

My biggest suggestion is knowing what works as a salesperson is not what works as a coach/trainer.ย

Great salespeople are good because they can juggle a bunch of things at once.ย

Great coaches are great because they can force people to focus on only one or two things at a time.ย

Find the one thing that each AE is struggling with and focus on that until you no longer have to talk about it any longer.ย

Isnโ€™t it normal when switching to higher position for them to give you higher base salary and OTE to be lower i.e depending on the team results? Of course, team youโ€™re training :) thatโ€™s how I understand this part, and itโ€™s logical in terms that you donโ€™t spend that much time selling but training other people.
