Salesman with young kids

What do you try to teach your kids that you have learned from having a job in sales.

I have twin boys and am prepping for how I am going to teach them things. Sales is one of the most valuable skills in the world and I wish I had taken courses and classes and mentorships around it sooner.

But if not me then them so lets hear it!

I think the biggest skill they can take away is being able to convey a message. Communication is a very important skill that needs to be honed in at a young age.

I don't have kids, but I when I do I plan on teaching them about negotiation skills and overall sales skills.

Life is one big negotiation, be it for buying products, getting a better offer on a job, convincing your mom to let you have a sleepover party, or convincing your buddies to help you move for free.

Life is also one big sale - you need to be able to sell yourself as a friend, romantic partner, employee, employer, leader, parent...

Not just a "sales" skill but I also want to put importance on public speaking skills. Being able to present as confident, well put together, and well spoken can get someone so far in life.

Honestly, a lot of it is social skills.

Knowing how to relate and empathize with people. How to actively listen. How to be disarming and accommodating.

Having a good understanding of the word "value" as it relates to commodities.

I would love to be able to teach my kids (8 and 6 at the moment) to be able to say NO and to focus on something they like or are good at, not want everything and be everywhere.

AND not always bend over to get all the deals.  You need to have enough deals in your pipeline to say no to discounts and pushy clients, and to be ready to loose jobs for keeping your standards up.

Do NOT ignore that elephant in the room, or it will stomp you to death. Address it head-on and develop a path forward. Without the renewal squared away you won't have to worry about pivoting to another topic--you'll lose the client and won't have to talk to them again.
