SDR/BDR do you really want to be one?

All these posts about SDR/BDR lifers and spouting out all these nonsense about how great it is to be one blah blah blah, no hate or anything but do yall really love it that much?

Or is this all BS and more to impress your potential new sales manager because you are just job hooping from 1 SDR to another SDR role?

I for one did not enjoy it, sure you learn great skills but man it sucked lol.

I enjoyed my time as an SDR. I wouldn't do it again. But I did enjoy it.

I know a few people who are lifers. For most of them its not because they love the job. It's because they love the flexibility of it. You can work anywhere, you can work any hours you want. You never have to wear anything other than sweatpants and a hoodie. Once you make it to AE you have to actually get dressed sometimes, go out and meet clients, etc.

Plus, SDR's make damn good money in comparison to 80% of the country. While they're the lowest paid in the industry, its still far from a bad income. So if you don't want the stress of being an AE and running sales cycles it can be a decent gig.

I must have missed those posts.
I'm an SDR currently and I'm in a bad drought. I started off as being the top performer, but I've had a terrible past 2 months. When I was doing great, I never thought to myself 'I want to do this forever".... lol, no. Goal is definitely to become an AE or hit the lottery, whichever comes first.

Itโ€™s downs matter how much of a grind it is, the days where you kill it and setting awesome meetings and getting praise from leadership makes you think you can be a lifer.

Whenever I see those posts I assume they just had a killer day, week or even quarter and it went a little to their head.

I donโ€™t take the posts too seriously since 99% of the time you check back 2 years later and they are out of sales.

The goal is AE then sales director. But I heard good AE were all SDR/BDR's before!

Where are you seeing these posts? Most of the ones I've seen here have been people wondering how to make the jump to AE.

Wait, let me guess - LI?

I might have missed those posts. But I enjoyed being an SDR for sure. There were bad days and good days, but yeah. As an AE too, I enjoy the job and the pay check.

I work for a company overseas and they take the SDR role much more seriously then in the US. It is not viewed as a junior role there. I think the SDR gig is the foundation of your sales life and you shouldn't rush to get out of it. Two years ago, I would have said the opposite and just jump to AE as fast as you can.

With that said, I do want to get to AE or management at some point. Hopefully by next year. But when I get there, I know I will have an expertise of talking to and setting meetings with SVP/C-Suite level people. As opposed to my colleagues that got promoted to AE very quickly and never got the grasp of truly prospecting and rely on inbounds to get business.

It also helps that my SDR salary has increased significantly. When I started in Nov 2019, my base was 35k and OTE 60k (but more like 96% of people made 50k or under). Now my base is 80k and OTE a bit over 100k.

no one wants to be a BDR. but for early career sales people, i think its necessary to cut your teeth with the role and move up from there.

just the worst. I can appreciate it when ppl tell me WHY i should care about what you have to say when you have been in sales for only 5 years.
