Should PTO policy be in the offer letter?

okay, after 2 weeks of working as a contractor, the company finally decided to bring me on as their first BD hire, "Director of Business Development" - has a nice ring to it.

the letter checks out. the regular stuff, except nothing about PTO.

I checked in with the COO and they said "oh it's unlimited, take what you need kind of deal, within reason"

what do you think? should it be listed as such or not necessary?

Yea makes sense. It was just something I’m not use to. Not alarmed about it after hearing this! I agreed to move forward and start soon!

At least send an email with ‘just to confirm you indicated there is unlimited PTO correct?’ And then if he responds with yes , then you have it in writing at least.

It’s usually a company policy, so not usually in an offer letter unless you asked for something outside of policy.

Yes as well as benefits?

Benefits (health) stuff was listed. But yea I thought it was odd to not at least put it in there. Nbd tho I guess it’s less common in tech startups.

Thank you! Yea it wasn’t a deal breaker whatsoever. I was just curious. After a layoff on December 30th, this is a welcomed comeback.

Congratulations on landing the role. PTO isn’t in my contract either, but our HR has an employee guide that covers policies, including PTO.

Yeah I would try to define what is deemed in reason. Doesnt surprise me its not in the offer letter, but try to get it more defined.

Speaking from personal experience, it's safest to get everything in writing. So, if it's not listed in the offer letter then it needs to be at least listed in some type of employee handbook

I guess not necessary, if I were you I would be more focusing on the bonus and the career path, so you could take his word for now and see how it works. In case you wanna still get some more peace of mind, try to check if the company may have any bad history in that regard that may let you reconsider!!

Yea all of the other deets were worked out. Was just curious if it’s a major red flag or nbd. Sounds like it’s nbd. And they confirmed it’s a “take what you need, unlimited” not worried about pto payouts or anything.

Better to have in the offer letter just for your satisfaction

Mine was.. if it is a specific amount of days or unlimited. Either way it should say in the letter.

I've seen it in a employee handbook during my onboarding, not in the offer letter.

It doesn't need to be listed. PTO is unlimited and so you should see that in your HR system day 1. Here is the catch, if you leave there's no PTO payout.

I would be happy for the consistent gig rather than how much time you need off.

Right. It’s less about how much time I need off (I don’t need time offrn) and more about transparency and expectations. I’ve only worked a handful of places and the PTO policy was stated somewhere.

It should because it's part of your renumeration
