Stop Bull Rushing Cold Calls

Dearest xDRs,

Want to know which technique is a foolproof way to piss off your prospect on a first-impression cold call? A bull rush.

Here is the most common execution:

Prosect picks up: Hello
Shitty rep: Hey PBC, this is Turd Face. You don't know me, but [starts their assumptive pitch]
PBC: Wait a second, I am not the right person.
SR: Keeps going and pretends not to hear me.
PBC: Hey! Stop. I'm not the right person.
SR: Oh? I assumed based on [choose title, company size, industry] you would be.

How do you fix this? Ask at least ONE open ended question at the top of the call. Maybe something that tells you if your prospect fits the ICP.

Every time I get this call I typically hang up before the rebuttal or diversion that comes after I keep telling them to polite fork off.

I had a rep that would keep doing this and wonder why they weren't setting any appts and blamed their territory or the product we were selling.

They were unwilling to change their process/talk track and really shined a spot light on their inability to listen.

He would usually respond with "I have been doing this for 10+ years, I think I know what I am doing." to which I replied silently and he didn't hear me thankfully(HR case waiting to get poked) "this makes sense why you are still a BDR then"

Can't fix stupid.

Thats what happens when all the training they get is a script

Exactly, same as the general corp reenactment videos, lol, that makes it very common thing to happen .

And I agree that most of these cold callers count on the script more than the prospect's profile!

Bro it’s so frustrating. I have a coworker that does this shit. He talks over them for 30 seconds then asks for the meeting.

We’ve been trying to coach him last few weeks and he doesn’t listen

Company I'm at trains us to go through the pitch as if the person who picked up was the person we were trying to reach. "If they aren't the right person they'll tell you" is what we're told.

Granted, we don't do any cold calls (everyone is a free trial sign up or some other "warm" lead) and almost all the businesses are sole props or other forms of self employed micro businesses, but still. It's a very different way of calling than I was used to.

So they’re likely the right person since they have a free trial? Do you ask any questions at all before you start?

In theory? Yes. In reality about 50-60% are fraudulent sign ups or some other form of wrong info. It's intro, and then "tell me about your business and what brought you to us."

That feels way more acceptable than what I’m describing.

This is irritating and frustrating. I have a few reps who only talks and never listens (with the prospects or colleagues). I am literally tired of wasting all the feedback.

Listening and asking questions is a known attribute of successful sales people, regardless of role or industry. If you don’t learn that quickly you will have a hard time being successful.

Lion’s share of XDRs are fresh college graduates. Who do you think taught them this nonsense ?

I don't agree. I do this and it makes sure i can tell them why I called. However, I don't do they pitch

So you’re not doing what I am describing, but still disagreeing?

Yes and no. I get what you’re saying. However, I like the element of some sort of a bull rush. Meaning going really fast when they pick up. After that I slow down and try to speak a lot less.

That’s fine, I’m just going to have a bad experience and hang up.

Let’s just say it works for me in my current market. If it stops working I will indeed neet to change it.
