Thoughts on negotiating a promotion?

I've been with my company for exactly a year now as a Solution Engineer for SMB. My manager and I have ongoing career discussions (I'd say once a quarter) and I 100% know that I'll be up for promotion in the next few months.

I'm currently an IC2 and next promotion will be an IC3 moving up to MM.

Problem is - I don't know what to expect for my pay bump. I work at an enterprise software company (based in SF Bay Area) with over 8,000 employees.

Should I ask my manager what the compensation band is for an IC3 Solution Engineer? I heard in California, my manager needs to legally provide the answer if I ask.

How should I tackle this conversation about compensation?

PS: My manager and I have an awesome relationship.

Hi welcome to the War Room!

I'd be upfront and ask. You won't know until you ask.

....are you legally allowed to ask your employer about employer pay bands? Of course. Why wouldn't you? Do it, do it now.ย

Also do some research to see what the market rate is for someone with those responsibilities.ย

Thank you for the advice!ย

I've been looking everywhere and anywhere for the market rate of a mid-level Solution Engineer. Unfortunately, there's not much information. I can only find data on software engineers (levels.fyi) and account executives.ย

Why wouldnt you be able to ask what the pay band is? This should be one of the first things you ask after you understand the new responsibilities of the role.ย

Second, talk to some other companies, not because you are looking for a new job but to give yourself perspective on what that role is worth on the open market. This will also give you more ammo walking into the conversation/negotiationย

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
I knew you worked in a large company before getting there based on description alone. Just ask for the promotion. My guess is it will turn out there are some hidden set of requirements. Worst case you find out what those are.
