Feedback for Promotion

Would like to hear what others on here think about this.I’m wrapping up a year at a company, and have been working as a BDR. The idea of becoming a BDR manager was brought forward, and my manager had asked me to think about it and come to him with any questions and whether or not I’d like to enter this role. Everything went smooth but since this is a new position at the company, they don’t really have guidelines or a comp plan in place for this new position. I suppose I already accepted the position and we wants to announce to the team the promotion. I spoke with a few folks and it seemed like finalizing the details and making sure I agree with the new comp plan would be best before the announcement. I suppose the announcement would kinda coincide with Q4 kick off, but do you think the best thing would be to wait until details are more ironed out and the comp plan agreed upon before announcement? It doesn’t really give me leverage if I don’t agree with what they offer and I’m “already in the role”.

thanks

Get the comp plan in writing before agreeing to anything. Also understand as a manager there is a potential that you could make less than your highest performing bdrs. In the simplest form a managers job is to help their employees make money and to assist them but not get in their way. I take pride in if my reps are making more than I am at the end of the year because that means I am doing my job right and assisting and coaching and not hindering them.

Bingo. I often have multiple reps on my team making more than I do and that’s a huge win IMO

Get deal done first, announcement second. Otherwise they’ll slot you into the role and you’ll have a more difficult time negotiating.

Hey first off congrats for such a big achievement within a year!

It's always good to have a proper compensation plan, however, I understand there is no guidelines due to many reasons including they never had such role in the past.

I would definitely take the role because this will give me an exposure towards new vertical, however, I would make sure I'm earning more than before  + I have a proper KPIs in place.

P.S. you may read more on how BDR Mgr compensation work to see if you can put frwd any suggestions to your mgmt

Comp plan first 100%. Also, think hard if this is the path you want. I used to want to be a manager and then thought managing 10 of me would be a nightmare so I’d rather be an IC the rest of my life if I’m being honest.

How do you suppose you already accepted it? My advice, don’t ever accept a position when you dont know what it is and entails. This is obvious advice.. if you feel like you dont have a choice have a conversation with HR or hiring manager and discuss your concerns, how to be succesful, etc.

Details first, then the announcement.    Make sure the plan works for you before you accept the promotion.  There are some great suggestions in the comments about that, and I agree with the coaching you've gotten for the role itself.  Good luck!
