Training Remotely

What are some things to do for training new hires remotely? We don't record calls, can't really sit in with a splitter.

additionally, what are things you HATED when you were trained remotely?

This is something I'm struggling with right now! We just hired a new team member & have been onboarding him remotely for the last 3 weeks, but it doesn't seem to be going well.

We've been trying to fill his days with going through different educational resources, sitting in on calls, sending recorded demo's, but he doesn't really seem to be grasping the information. I'm not sure if it's because it's remote & things stick better in person, but we're also in need of remote training tips.

The second half of my onboarding was remote a year and a half ago & my absolute favorite thing was sitting in on calls. I know you said you can't really do this, but it was one of the most helpful things for me.

Yeah I guess I can just make the calls and merge the new hire in? Could be a PITA, I’ve done some speaker phone and Microsoft teams virtual bullpens but I just feel like an overlord to some people

We're all new and remote. I was really worried about remote onboarding when I started. Our training programs were great and really well made, but I was basically watching 6 hours of content / day. I think you need a blend of active stuff in the mix. Aside from the hands on learning aspect, it's very very mind numbing to just watch videos all day long.

Try to get some role play stuff going, bring various departments onboard so your rep understands the entire customer journey (except finance and legal I woudn't wish that on an enemy)

Check out that onboarding journal that's floating around too

I'm a new hire. and it sucks to be trained remotely.
but for sure one thing that you must have in remote environment is creating a healthy setting of excepting any and all questions from the new hires to any and all other members of the team.
(on top of having a buddy system..)
plus, if you don't have other reps recorded calls then i suggest creating a mock call practice sessions for at least the first month.
it could be a 1:1 rep+ lead or rep+rep or rep+trainer.
