VP of Sales w an individual quota?

Should a VP of Sales carry any type of individual number in addition to the team number?

The reason I ask, I'm being offered a promotion to VP of sales but they are asking me to continue carrying a number (1/2 of the previous target) on top of the responsibilities of vp. I'm concerned this will result in both individual sales and vp responsibilities being half-assed or requiring me to work way too much.

Thoughts?

I think giving sales people a VP title is kind of low.ย

VPs are charting the course.
Directors are organizing the how to get there.Managers implement the how into actionable items.Staff do the day to day tasks to accomplish the goals.

If you're carrying a quota, you're a VP in name only.

Ask for more benefits, or something to accompany the title.

This WOULD work, if your goal is to hire a VP of Sales with zero VP experience and the cherry on top is they are a good operator and can also do some of the job to makeup for their new manager pitfalls.

That is accurate, I have zero VP experience. A good way to cut your teeth while still contributing? I just have a hard time thinking I can do both without dropping the ball somewhere, working crazy hours, and resulting in me hating it.ย

Managing pipe is no part time job ๐Ÿ˜… as I'm sure you're WELL awareย @thesalesdocrxย

If you don't know how to forecast and set expectations with prospects appropriately yeah.ย  That said, I've juggled both individual contribution and management at the same time many times over and over in the past.

I know if someone is going to buy and when, if I don't, chances are I dropped the ball myself there somewhere along the way.

I guess youโ€™re named the sales doc for a reason! โ€œDropping the ballโ€ is a forever learning sales game imo

I've never heard of this. Managing and being an IC are two very different types of things. I think by carrying a quota it would take away from your ability to properly manage

I think it really depends on the size of the team/company you are joining.

If it's a small company/startup with a super small team or you're the first full sales hire - it makes sense. I was the sole sales rep and had to work with marketing, create sequences, had a number, made cold calls, etc. Then when we hired my director, he had an individual number.ย

If it's more than 2-3 sellers including yourself, it will probably take away from your ability to manage and coach - putting more of a load on the entire team to hit their numbers, which will cause you to miss your individual number and the team number.

This seems like a red flag. Like one of those "Management Apprenticeship" job posts that turns out to be mall kiosk of verizon pre-paid plans. At this start-up I worked with, they were hiring for "Director of Sales" but the position was really just an AE and their "VP of Sales" had one report...I think they were trying to get more competitive talent, but they shot themselves in theย  foot. The competent and successful AE's knew this wasn't a legit management position, they got the worst of the crop.ย

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
NO! I don't want to be competing with my VP for resources and I CERTAINLY don't want to compete with prospects for my VP's time.

No way! I have heard of it a pre-seed start upas as you may be the only revenue generator while you build the team.

There is genuinely no way in which you could do all the parts of the VP job well and still carry a bag. It's just not possible

I think it makes sense, if:

1) You are working larger scale deals that the reps you are managing should or cannot.
2) Your deal flow is strategic and agreed upon targets by the c-suite.
3) Your operations/strategy work is not adversely impacted by your pipeline work.

You should not be out there acting as if you're still an IC, and if that's what they want you to do then politely decline the offer and save the stress.
