What a question!

How would you respond?

Had an interview yesterday for a SaaS Sales role, and the hiring manager asked something that got me thinking: Do you consider yourself a money-driven person?

I confess I thought for about 5 seconds before answering- today, I'm less than I was yesterday. I'm sure money is an essential aspect of life, but I've lived enough to be sure that other things are much more meaningful.

What do you think their objective is with this question and what would you answer?

In my opinion... if you are a salesperson who is not money-driven then it would be a red flag.

I'd agree with this. It doesn't make you greedy, but it makes you driven, which is a requirement for a rep.

Its definitely not greedy and if the hiring manager thinks it is then do not go there... at the end of the day we are driven to close business with no-cap which allows you to make as much money as you are willing to put in.

Since it's the hiring manager you definitely want to answer in the affirmative. If it was an internal recruiter or HR you avoid it. Most non-sales people would view it as a negative to be money driven.

Thought provoking question. I think it's meant to put you on the spot and think critically for a second or two.

Probably not a true right/wrong answer, rather how quickly were you able to generate a thoughtful resonating response.

Oh this same question was part of one of my interviews in the past...for a sales role. I said something along the lines of "salespeople are incentivized by commissions therefore yes, in that sense I am a money-driven person". They did not like the answer. But is ok. I rather be honest. Besides, we sales reps are a different breed and like the old saying goes "If sales were easy, anybody would do it".

@Hakuna_matata: It took me a long time to learn this, but agreeing with someone or something, even if you don't personally believe in it, is ok.

"Today, I'm less than I was yesterday". This hit me hard. But, if 10 years in corporate has taught me something, it's that you don't have to judge yourself for white lies.

For 99% of sales leaders, a "No" to this question would be an immediate red flag. Not saying if it should or shouldn't be, the savages can answer that better.

But if you already know that answering this kind of question in the affirmative, is going to serve you, do it! Even if you don't wholeheartedly agree with it.

ps: welcome to the War Room, savage!

HM was looking for a yes. It can't be the only thing but it should be a thing.

i think it could be two fold.

1. they may think that money motivated ppl are the best.

2. they may be looking to see HOW you answer the question, not so much what your answer is you know?

I think a solid answer most ppl can connect with in sales is that, yes money motivated me, 100% but not because I love money. but because I want to provide a life im excited about. and the more money I make the more options i have and that gets me excited.

I got in sales for money. I always answer "money" when Iโ€™m asked why sales. I say the more money I make, the more money you make so itโ€™s a win-win situation

Yes.
My Sales Director asks this question to any rep they hire and if the answer isn't yes, that is a big flag against them. We are in sales to make money.

She meant it in the best way possible, and she is one of the few I've met that actually 'gets it'.
