What certs to get as an SDR looking to advance in tech?

Hey all first post here,

I'm an SDR at a data company and I'm getting a grand per year to go towards learning materials.

Thought it would be cool to get a certification or two to learn something new and have an edge when it comes to looking for my next role (thinking CSM, Sales Ops, product marketing, or a strategy role way way way down the line).

My problem is that it seems that most online courses and certs are essentially worthless (mickey mouse certs) and no one really cares that you got them.

What certs and courses did y'all enjoy taking and which do you think could stand the test of time?

Don't get certs in anything Sales oriented, or at least don't pay for them. Its a waste. If you want specific Sales training, I'd present it to your company for them to pay for as Team event, not you as an individual. And don't pay for anything you can just read in a book.

The real question is what tech areas do you want to take your career - cyber security, AI, networking, etc? There are industry recognized certs for all of these which are more technical in nature and much more valuable to a hiring manager. For example - in Networking, if you understand the 7 layers of the OSI module and can speak to them, you're much more valuable then someone who can't.

So my 2cents - look at industry-recognized certs which will open doors to the companies and positions you want over the next few years.

All of this.
Sales is learned the hard way. But industry-specific certs, as outline here, can help. Just never pay for them out of your own pocket.

I have no certifications relative to sales. I've got a few relative to the vertical I sell into. As the legendary @Pachacuti has already stated, learn the vertical you care to be able to sell most.

Actual question, if you were looking at two similar resumes, would a certification like that tip the scale ? Or not really?

I wouldn’t do any certs unless it’s a hyper technical product

Possessing them is deemed insignificant and does not elicit any interest from others.
