What would you do?

Would you go to a big company as AM in HR Tech with a good base salary and a OK comp plan, OTE 80k$

Or

2-3 Months SDR -> Junior AE with a pretty nice comp plan (20% on ARR) at a cyber tech start up with a series D launching later this year? 80k$

i dont have any closing exp. and im just afraid that the speed at a startup will fuck up my development as i will the AE nr 3?

ps. this is in the nordics

"2-3 Months SDR -> Junior AE with a pretty nice comp plan (20% on ARR) at a cyber tech start-up with a series D launching later this year? 80k$"

Is this a fake option? No one takes FOUR ROUNDS of funding without launching a product. Or are you saying they are taking on a Series D later this year (which is not something to rely on)? Also, nothing guarantees that switch from SDR to AE, especially since you have no closing experience.

Finally, I'd make the choice based on your tolerance for risk. Can you risk joining a startup that may fail as a business, or fail you by setting you up to take on a closing role that will ultimately land you on a PIP if you don't perform? If that's a cool challenge, do it. If that's scary, go with option A.

Something doesn't add up.

Can you share who it is? I'm pretty plugged in to the cyber community.

According to crunch base their pre-seed, not series D. So they're looking to take on an A round.

I'm not keen on awareness training space. And I'm skeptical of AI in general. I'd imagine security folks would be leery of letting an AI run their awareness programs.

Pitchbook says they've been around since 2019 and have raised a $1.82M Seed round. This tells me they need the money to survive, and if they don't raise you will be left out in the cold. Been there, done that.

This is not the time to join companies that have not secured their Series A already, or any funding in the past 12 months for that matter.

To me I would say option 1,cuz however the promotion cycle at option 2 looks nice but I believe it's not guaranteed to get to the junior AE step after the first three month, isn't that the case!!

Knowing some of hardship start ups have gone though lately it might be more stable at a large company.

I would lean option one, immediate closing experience with a big name and higher base.

The promotion to AE at the start up can take WAY longer than 3 months

All I'll add to the comments below is that there are many, many posts on here about SDR/BDR not getting their promised promotion to AE. I'd be cautious in that regard.

If I were you and I am
performing well with an assurance that Iโ€™ll become an AE in 3 months, Iโ€™ll stick around. Reason - promotion will a good add on to the resume, becoming an AE will open up many doors in the future, Cyber tech interests me vs HR tech.

Be very careful accepting an SDR role with the promise of a near term promotion. Make sure you are crystal clear on the trigger point/s for that promotion. Look for proof that other reps have gone through the same entry point and indeed got moved to AE in their first few months.

Then keep in mind that with startups OTE's, KPI's, etc. are more of an educated guess. They really don't know because they simply haven't been around long enough.

Now with that all said, start-ups are my favorite. That's where I'd go if all the above checked out.

In todays market, Iโ€™d take one all day all. There is too much risk in two. Companies will make promises that never pan out.

Depends on your confidence to be a good Hunter.. If you think you can do it, theres a lot more opportunity to be had throughout your career.

Warning: this option will lead to loss of hair, insomnia and an adderal addiction
