When do you NOT want to use any AI in your sales process?

One of my best sales reps came to me with a proposal for one of his prospects. One that he had been cultivating (read: chasing) for well over 6 months.


He finally got to a place where the prospect took his call, had an initial “discovery” (read: inquisition) call and had now been given a chance to “propose” (read: beg for) and opportunity to sell to this company.


Mind you, he’s been researching. Following on socials, commenting were appropriate and somewhat on top of their competitive position in their market.


So. We’ve created a strategy to get them the proposal once we know what they actually want to buy. Here’s the challenge:


The rep went to ChatGPT/SalesGPT and shared the outcome with his champion. That person told my rep that it was “pretty darn close” to the truth, so use the information and go for the proposal.


So. He came to me and asked for the blessing. I have a day or two to decide if we are 1) Going to use the data, and 2) Whether or not it’s actually accurate (post, August 2021 as some have previously written).


As a sales leader or sales rep, what would you do?? I think some of the information is good. But it’s not perfect or even half-way in terms of how to present what we do.


Maybe this is too basic? Maybe it’s too advanced. I’m just asking for feedback. Thanks.

It seems to me that your rep, from what you described, has not uncovered real pain here. He may have pointed out a couple things, just enough that the prospect is open to kicking the tires, but not enough that they will actually pull the trigger on anything unless you give away the farm on the deal.

But that's just from what I gleaned from your description.

I think this is key, if we are ChatGPT'ing value and concerns, there is definitely not going to be enough to translate to a signed contract

If it's the free version of ChatGPT, I've found that to be factually accurate around 50% of the time. Probably dependent on the subject matter, but in my tests it's given me misattributed song lyrics, incorrect TV show episode names, told me Mickey Rooney was related to the Rooney family that owns the Steelers, incorrect corporate structures, etc. I would say it's best used as a tool for generic composition, and less a true generative AI.

Reps perspective - if i am understanding your situation and ask correctly, this is the equivalent of finding & using extremely valuable data in a source that the prospect wouldn't really find to be THATTTTTT credible (random website publication, blog post, etc.)

If I were in your shoes, I would have your rep do research on the the ChatGPT output to find credible sources that support it - essentially double checking the output. This shouldn't be hard or take much time if it's actually relevant information and is accurate.

This absolutely needed for the rest of the selling process as you don't want to get into the following situation:

Your rep proceeds with the ChatGPT output and the executive buyer agrees with it all, proposal gets created etc.

Then, out of nowhere, 5 or 6 executives or the Board want to be briefed/presented to as the final step of the buying process.

Your rep presents everything and one of the big wigs asks where he got the data or info from. Answering "from ChatGPT" can throw numerous wrenches in the process if not halt it altogether. But answering "it came from numerous sources like Mckinsey, G2, Gartner, etc." (the credible companies where he validated the ChapGPT data/put), that will be that.

Had a similar situation early on in my career where I presented data and insights that my company had gathered and put out a publication on. So when the big wig asked the question of where this came from, I said "from our industry trends report" and he said "so you are presenting data that your company gathered and published likely with the sole reason of selling more of your software, and presenting that to us as a driver for us to buy your software? You see the biased concerns I have with that right?"

Luckily, I checked and verfied the sources behind my company's publication and was able to say "I definitely do and didn't want to waste any of your time with listing out the sources behind the scenes. We gathered this from a Gartner report, a McKinsey report, & and E&Y case study for our industry trends report. I would be happy to send you the links to all three once we get out the meeting if you would like?"
