When is it too early to make the move to management?

Title.

I'm curious what you guys think. I feel like there is definitely such a thing as too early like if you go from SDR to SDR Team lead/management as you could very easily get stuck.

Obviously someone has to do those roles, but will it be a limiting factor going forward? Like would it stop you from being an AE manager at some point or a VP etc?

Obviously Sales Management is an entirely different beast than being an IC but I'm curious if the lack of experience in like closing large accounts, or closing in general is detrimental to future career moves.

Don't become and SDR manager unless that's what you want to do for the rest of your life. You'll end up like this ;)

Going from SDR to SDR Manager can be a kiss of death. You have no closing experience, and you are managing non-closers. As a leader, I am unlikely to hire you for an AE-management role due to the fact you've never "been there". Your team won't respect you, and that will be your kiss of death.

Get experience across all aspects of a sales org, then make that move into management. Close for a couple of years and decide you want to manage a top-of-funnel team? No problem, you can always pivot back to closing or head into leadership on that end of the funnel as well.

Don't rush into the following:

1) Love
2) Limbaugh
3) Showers with any man resembling Harvey Weinstein. Though he tells you U MUST, be cautious...just don't embarrass him.

Idk much about being an SDR manager, but i feel like when if you want those higher up roles you need more extensive closing experience.

I have worked for people who have never closed a deal or hadn't in years and they were always problematic managers

SDR okay, SDR --> AE --> Management ๐Ÿ‘, SDR --> SDR manager, never unless I know that is my ideal job and don't want to do anything elseย

I think it depends on skill set, how much do you really like your company, and mindset.ย

I'd say you need 3-5 years experience in your role or at least in what you'll be managing to make the jump and be able to coach people.
I feel like a similar mistake is when someone does Mid-market for a year and then thinks they can just jump to enterprise.ย
Though take that with a grain of salt since every org is different.
