Wow! I can't believe they did this!

I sell solutions with an average deal size around $250k, but can range anywhere between $40k- $750k. When I was hired, my compensation was clearly defined in my offer letter. I have been employed with my company for 2 years and have increased the average deal size from under $100k and have attracted bigger fish to the organization. I have also met target both years and exceeded the 2023 in April.

So here's the deal:

My compensation plan already included a cap of $25k for any given deal. I focused on finding opportunities to max this out. My first big deal came within 5 months of starting with the organization and I almost achieved this goal. Fast forward to a year later and I closed a deal that would pay out the $25k and I was excited. I closed the deal on 04/03. During my next 1:1 with my leader, I confirmed the calculation. On 05/25- two days before I should have been paid for the contract, my CEO's called to let me know they changed the cap to $10k retroactively to 04/01. What's worse is that I had just travelled to attend a conference. I was already there. (Personal note: I skipped my daughter's 5th grade graduation to be there.)

I have had time to process this for several months. I revisited the topic with my boss and the feedback was heard but no action was taken. The more I had time to think, the more I found to get angry about.

  • They did something illegal when they breached the contract we signed before I onboarded. (I consulted a lawyer on this)
  • If they were willing to breach a contract with me, what about the companies I am bringing to the table?
  • I mistrust my leader because even if it isn't true, I have started to wonder if the decision to reduce my commission was so that he could have more for the himself.
  • As a salesperson, all I have is my reputation. I am having trouble confidently selling anymore.

I am actively looking for opportunities but I considering negotiating a severance package to include the $25k they shorted me and payment for signing an NDA. I am sure they don't want those clients to know about their deceitful business practices especially because I work in a small industry and will probably land in the same circles with my new role.

After that long winded story, Please share your thoughts.

I have no advice and others will be more equipped to handle this but wow.

Companies are such snakes. I can empathize, itโ€™s tough to sell when you know the true colors of the organization. Thatโ€™s how I felt before I was laid off at my most recent role.

Iโ€™m still here. Besides being a snake, I do have some benefits. I work from home, I get 3 weeks vacation plus several holidays and we close from Christmas to New Years.
Itโ€™s hard to leave. But I am only as good as my numbers, right? Iโ€™ve closed two small deals since.

This is a load of bullshit but not all that surprising. Grimy, unethical, stupid, yes - but not surprising.
I think you should consider that negotiation once you find somewhere else to land.
So sorry you're going through this

Thanks. I know I should stay until I find another job- especially with all the extra benefits. But Iโ€™m growing inpatient in my job search. Just keep swimming! Just keep swimming! ๐ŸŽถ

Well you have a few options -
(1) rage quit
(2) rage quit and lawyer up
(3) rage quit and burn the motha down (not recommended)
(4) try to neogitiate a bump in pay to make up for the commish reduction
(5) suck it up butter cup and move on

The company got greedy. Capping commissions is NEVER a good thing. It only hurts the company in the end. So it sucks what they did to you.

It wouldnโ€™t hurt though to check in with an attorney on this though.

It has been a slow rage. I am looking and will keep being patient. I have a lot to consider when finding a new role.

That's so frustrating they scalped your pay retroactively. Sounds like quiet quitting and apply elsewhere. But like your comment said it seems like there's some nice bennies.

also - "your two small deals since then". Would you want to give it 100% after they fucked you like that? I know I wouldn't give it my all, so don't beat yourself up on your performance after the fact.

I'm so sorry. Glad you're already talking to a lawyer. I'd negotiate a severance after you've landed the new role.

Iโ€™ve only consulted a lawyer. I felt like it was illegal but didnโ€™t know for sure. Now I do.

If the lawyer you consulted said they broke the law then start looking for another job while they build your case.

Youโ€™ll eventually get a settlement but no way in hell should you be sticking around.

This is frustrating and annoying especially when you give your 100%I have seen companies realizing their mistakes only after losing talents that brought great business in.
I hope this gets sorted out for you, best wishes.

Yeesh. Nothing says we value you and view you as a foundational partner in growing this company like a last-minute change in comp. Trust your instincts. If anything this is a pretty clear sign that other factors are at play.
