I sell solutions with an average deal size around $250k, but can range anywhere between $40k- $750k. When I was hired, my compensation was clearly defined in my offer letter. I have been employed with my company for 2 years and have increased the average deal size from under $100k and have attracted bigger fish to the organization. I have also met target both years and exceeded the 2023 in April.
So here's the deal:
My compensation plan already included a cap of $25k for any given deal. I focused on finding opportunities to max this out. My first big deal came within 5 months of starting with the organization and I almost achieved this goal. Fast forward to a year later and I closed a deal that would pay out the $25k and I was excited. I closed the deal on 04/03. During my next 1:1 with my leader, I confirmed the calculation. On 05/25- two days before I should have been paid for the contract, my CEO's called to let me know they changed the cap to $10k retroactively to 04/01. What's worse is that I had just travelled to attend a conference. I was already there. (Personal note: I skipped my daughter's 5th grade graduation to be there.)
I have had time to process this for several months. I revisited the topic with my boss and the feedback was heard but no action was taken. The more I had time to think, the more I found to get angry about.
- They did something illegal when they breached the contract we signed before I onboarded. (I consulted a lawyer on this)
- If they were willing to breach a contract with me, what about the companies I am bringing to the table?
- I mistrust my leader because even if it isn't true, I have started to wonder if the decision to reduce my commission was so that he could have more for the himself.
- As a salesperson, all I have is my reputation. I am having trouble confidently selling anymore.
I am actively looking for opportunities but I considering negotiating a severance package to include the $25k they shorted me and payment for signing an NDA. I am sure they don't want those clients to know about their deceitful business practices especially because I work in a small industry and will probably land in the same circles with my new role.
After that long winded story, Please share your thoughts.
