3 years of suck

Just had an interview yesterday and the head of sales said, "your first 3 years here are gonna suck". I don't know if this was his way of weeding out lazy people, but that really was a ๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉfor me. I don't want my life to suck for 3 years just to make money. Anyone ever experienced anything like this?ย

Never came across something like that. 3 years is a long time to commit. Did you try to reason him why?ย

I don't know whether it's a red flag but I won't be comfortable with this at all and would try to stay away.ย

Sounds like you can do better. There are plenty of companies where the first few years donโ€™t suck

i expect the first few months to suck. but thats why you have a base and sometimes an 'average' commission. were you at a marine corp recruiting office or something?

Run for the hills.
He sounds like a d-bag and you donโ€™t even work for him yet. You can find better.

I take that as a transparent and honest admission of what your life will be like there. If you are willing to kill yourself for 3 years, which most finance, consulting, and legal professionals are ready for, then you are going to be in a good spot come year 4+.

Not personally seeing this as a red flag, but you should have taken this as an opportunity to dig deeper and ask the specifics for why.

That is a massive red flag. I had a company say something similar to that. Turns out it was basically a high-volume boiler room call environment. Glad I didn't do thatย

Did you ask why the first 3 would suck? Is it building out a territory? Does the sales cycle take 1+ years and youโ€™re responsible for building the pipeline so really itโ€™s going to be 18-24 months before you see any results. Or is everyone there miserable? Lol

Thatโ€™s an interesting thing to say. Do you know why heโ€™d say that? Did you ask?

Wow, I mean at the very least I'm glad you are being given a red flag upfront.

If there is a lack of ramp pay and youโ€™re heavily reliant on referrals to close business then 3 years could be realistic. But also 3 years of suck seems extreme. Iโ€™d pass on that one.

I would opt out of that right away. That is a big red flag for me and just gives me the impression your going to be the scum on the bottom of his shoe until you either get let go or move up after 3 years.
