$5K per year raise

So I talked to my CEO about getting the top preforming rep on my team a $5k raise in base. He hit above quota, the companies he brought in generated over 5 times his OTE, so I thought it wouldn't be too much of a problem.

The first thing the CEO said was "How much are we upping the daily touchpoints?"

I know him well enough, that when he say's touchpoints, he also means the qualified meetings booked too.

He wants a 66% increase in this reps output for a $5k base raise. Am I wrong in thinking this is kind of messed up?

I do not have any experience trying to get someone a raise, so I don't really know how to counter this.

The info that Bravado dropped yesterday will help out lots when talking about salary, but I'm afraid I will be bashing my head against a wall on this.

Has anyone else had a situation similar to this?

Context for more info, the company does not pay the highest wages and likes to skip over people who have more experience and demand a higher wage and offer the position to someone more junior.

Well, I can confidently say your CEO is a Boomer, for starters.ย

A $5k raise wouldn't even help him outpace inflation. It's called a Cost of Living wage increase.ย

They have the mentality of one, but are Gen X. I had a long back and forth with him regarding this, and I was able to get him down to 41% increase. Tried asking for more money, but he was just not having it. His reasoning was the experience my guy is getting from working here.ย

I did. But, nothing really happened. I got the 66% increase in work down to 41%, and he is not budging on the $5k. I'm afraid we will be losing this employee like we do every other one.ย

Iโ€™m sorry, but what? $5k is $416/mo. Thatโ€™s less than a lease on a new Outback. He wants to increase touches by 66% for less than a 10% raise? Fuck outta here.ย

Yup. I got him down to 41%, but he is not budging on the $5k. He would rather let people go that want more money and bring in new people, than give decent raises.ย

What RealPatrickBateman said. And I'd put it back on the CEO how much more he's worth to the company compared to a measly $5,000. Heck I'd ask to give him a $10k raise if he brought the company 5x what he already earns.ย

Guy sounds like either a tightwad or someone who's helming a sinking ship โ€“ or both.ย

Either way he comes off as someone who doesn't weigh opportunity costs well at all. If he wants to piss away good talent that doesn't take up valuable time being trained, then by all means keep it up chief.ย

He is very money conscious. Our departments don't even have budgets. Everything has to get approved by him in the end.ย ย

I tried to get more money, but that was a hell no.ย

You're not asking for a raise based on future activity.ย  ย You're asking for a raise based on performance activities to date, that resulted in gains for the company.ย  ย  The CEO has it totally screwed up, and in a very insulting way, too.

One way to address this is to mention that the rep needs to be compensated for the value of the work the rep is already putting in, and that the rep is already excelling - and is well worth the very small bump that's being proposed.

If I was that rep, I'd be looking elsewhere that isn't so stingy.

100%. But he is always looking to get the most out of people. He never gives out raises more than 10%.ย

We have lost two great sales reps in the last 8 months because of this exact reason.

Already on it. Lol I'm doing the position of managing the team, hiring, training, interviewing, and carrying a full quota for the last 8 months with no pay increase. Lol

Good lord. Yes, you and this rep both need to split! Proud of you for standing up for your people.
Itโ€™s too hard to change the mind of a leader like that. Like you said, youโ€™ll be banging your head against the wall.

Hey whatโ€™s your repโ€™s name? Iโ€™m looking to add to my team and it sure sounds like he is going to be looking. Your CEO is single handedly trying to kill his company. Get out while you can.

The CEO can respectfully fuck himself especially if thereโ€™s no plus in base in the highest inflation period in the last 20 years.

If the CEO can't justify ~235 more per paycheck for someone who 5xed their OTE than why does anyone still work there?

@TheLaughingWolf read all the comments, proud of you for sticking up for your guy and going to bat for your top people.
Seems like Youโ€™ve already come to this realization but you AND this top rep need to split honestly.
Even if you can win this one battle, this behavior is indicative of insanity - CEOโ€™s doing the same thing and expecting better results. Heโ€™s going to keep losing great people like you.
Cut your losses. Be candid but not attacking in your exit interview.
Lots of hot tech sales jobs out there now, yโ€™all will be fine.

Thanks @bandabanda. The stories I could tell that I just came to learn of this week. With his antics, something very bad will be coming down the pipeline that he will not see coming. And it will be brutal.ย
