A new industry...

Interviewing for a Director of Sales role for a startup next week. I check all the boxes, except it's a brand new industry for me.


I'm anticipating the bull crap "yOu NeEd InDuStRy ExPeRiEnCe" mumbo jumbo that they all say.


What's your best advice for answering the inevitable question of how will i be successful in a new industry?



EDIT: Interview went great. #2 happening this week. My answer to the above question was well received. I talked about how industry people typically rely too much on network and contacts and are unwilling to adapt and be agile enough to roll up their sleeves and do the dirty work. I then highlighted how I handled my lack of experience at my last stop. Getting close to an offer I'd say!

I like to ask why they personally think itโ€™s important and usually you get the network answer. And then I like a quote from an old CRO that said networks always end up drying up but someone that is a proven successful salesperson will find a way to win regardless of industry. I then put it back on them and say if itโ€™s a deal breaker for you then no problem to push them away and Iโ€™ve had success with that

You know they always have some sort of mumbojumbo. About industry, about experience, about having this but not this. Just objections to test your sales skills. Just focus on what you have, how transferrable the skills are, your networking skills, a rags to riches story and you're good. Good luck! Keep us posted on a follow up
