Added skills to SaaS sales career

Currently an SDR at a SaaS startup and looking for ways to level up my career, skills and resume. I've seen posts about adding tech certs but wondering what everyone would recommend for the credentials but also just useful skills to help progress your career?

Really tough to sell a complex solution to technical buyers if you don’t understand how and why the mousetrap was built. Equally tough to get hired without product/vertical experience.

It’s best to pick a lane and stay in it, learn it, and master it. SME value is not underrated.

TL;DR Know your shit

Well said.

Pick a niche, find a "must have", and go deep

In the meantime just get good at prospecting and getting feedback.

Being good at your job is better way to move up than certs.

Are you talking about getting certifications in the field you're in now? I don't see how that could hurt 🤷‍♀️

Are there AEs at your start up? Why not ask them about their career paths?

Getting a cert will never hurt, what are they saying for feedback when you interview for AE roles. How can you improve outside of having direct AE experience

Great question, and it's fantastic to see you proactively seeking to grow in your SaaS sales career. Oldcloser brings up an excellent point about the importance of understanding the solutions you're selling deeply. This technical acumen can be a significant differentiator, especially when dealing with informed buyers.
In addition to pursuing technical certifications, which are certainly valuable, consider developing a robust understanding of the customer success landscape. This knowledge not only enriches your conversations with prospects but also positions you as a consultant who can add tangible value post-sale.
Another skill that's often overlooked but crucial is storytelling. Being able to craft and convey the narrative of how your product fits into the customer's journey can be powerful. This isn't just about knowing the features and benefits but being able to articulate the impact on the customer's business in a way that resonates.
Lastly, a continuous learning mindset is key. Whether it's through formal education, mentorship, or self-study, staying current with industry trends and sales methodologies will keep you agile and relevant in a rapidly evolving field.
Hope this helps, and wishing you success as you build your expertise and advance in your sales career!
