Best practices on asking for good feedback from management?

Hey Team,

QQ, I'm not the best at asking for feedback, and tend to come off as unassertive and asking for help without looking like i've done my homework first.

I would like my feedback sessions to look more like "Hey i've done XYZ so far, and here is where I'm struggling, I'm missing some information here can you help me fill in the blanks". Rather than, hey I don't know this can you help.

We're a small team and hierarchy is pretty flat, but I'm the only non technical person in our startup (founding AE) and we sell a complex product, so complex parts aren't my strength, but I still want to show that I'm doing my part and not just throwing questions out there

I think what you said in the 2nd paragraph is pretty solidโ€ฆ

A big part of asking for constructive feedback is setting yourself AND your boss up well.

Let them know going into the meeting what they can expect, what topics, you want to cover and address any resources you feel like you may not have at the moment.

your pretty much there here is what i make sure im doing:
- make my request super specific and with good context. - Explain what i do know and dont know - Follow up with the person on how thier feedback helped.

Ex:
Me: " I have a prospect asking about our API integration. I understand that we can help build the integration, or just be an advisor for them to build it themself. What im not clear on is how to understand if they have the capability to do that. Before looping your team in what are the top 3 things I should ask so i dont waste your time"

VP Of Product: " 1. how big their team is, 2. what integrations they have handled before, 3. how fast they need it done. If we know this we can help lead the conversation about the specifics. "

Then follow up after thats done. Now you have asked for feedback and you both know the next time this comes up you will be prepared.

I really like the specificity of this response.
