Can I vent?

Joined a startup to build out their b2b unit. they've traditionally been b2c.

I'm making sales. doing good. it's great.

they asked me to help on the marketing & social side for some extra cash. had no choice but to take that offer. Easy job, easy extra cash, couple hours of work a day. great!

but.....

MARKETING IS DUMB! seriously. why are they the way they are? I can't deal with this. these people use their little buzzwords, they have their grand ideas...it's miserable to be inside that world.

I've always heard engineers+architects can't get along. seems that sales+marketing are the same.

Any horror stories of marketing/sales snaffoos??

My marketing team runs our OKRโ€™s across the company. So we have 3 meetings a week to review our OKR progress. ๐Ÿคฃ Meanwhile our website has shout outs from our โ€œcustomersโ€ which these businesses donโ€™t even exist anymore and a lot of them ate it in a very embarrassing/public fashion. Marketing doesnโ€™t drive any leads and takes credit for the one we get monthly. We havenโ€™t had sales collateral since early 2022 I think. So if you want any PDF ammo you better bust out MS PAINT and get creative.

Wait, why arenโ€™t we in marketing? Sounds like the only requirement is that youโ€™re dumb as shit. We can pretend!

You're welcome.
Marketing can be painful, but I have to say, my company has transitioned to good marketing practices lately, with collaboration and inbound leads picking up. Honestly, when the leads are up...marketing looks great and we love them!

Thank you for correcting, we can always count on you!

I've given up on the you're/your - y'all are on your own there.
And there was that one post a few days ago that was utterly and completely wrong - didn't bother. No point at all. But yeah, if there's a good correction, it will be had.

I completely get it.

Lots of people don't understand that words like SNAFU and FUBAR actually stand for something, so it's a good learning moment.

All those great terms that have military sources. As an AF Brat, I approve.

My dad has always loved military history, as does my brother, so I got exposed to a lot of it.

Big military family โ€ฆ all Navy on one side. If I say much more, I may dox myself (or maybe not, different last names). Letโ€™s just say one of my relatives is still used as an example in training for how not to be a sub captain.

And if they like the military, I HIGHLY recommend the WW II museum in NOLA. Itโ€™s really, really well done.

Say no more! Also LMAO. Youโ€™re not supposed to open the hatch underwater.

And if anyone is heading downtown that way Iโ€™ll make the suggestion.

Itโ€™s more like - see what happened during this skirmish? Do not do that.

And yeah, that museum is super. And mentions the ship my grandfather was killed on during WW II, which was a surprise.

Itโ€™s quite alright. Itโ€™s not like the family didnโ€™t know. Seeing tributes are always cool, particularly when unexpected.

Absolutely. On a much lighter note, I have an ancestor that invented something very cool and very common in the early 20th century, and didn't really believe the story as a kid but then randomly came across the fact in a book when I was like 9/10 and realized it wasn't a tall tale.

I've since seen that detail in a few places and have no doubt of its veracity.

Our product marketing team created over 500 opps for a couple of new products and dropped them on accounts WITH some no brain estimated amount included. They also did this in a pipeline reportable stage inflating our existing pipeline by 7 figures.

99% of the opps had to be deleted (not closed) because they were attached to accounts that lacked the core products even needed for the addons.

hahaha o boy you are just getting to this realization?
the biggest problem with sales and marketing working together is the metrics they are judged on!

We are judged on actual RESULTS. closed won. real revenue.

Marketing (most of the time although leading companies are changing this) are judged on bullshit metrics like "Marketing qualified leads" which is a think that marketing can just make up.

Until the teams are aligned on the same goals they will never be friends.

I know the pain - old org I had to do the sales and marketing job. Now I just get regularly abused for my ideas without them paying my hourly for ideas they can't come up with and the stuff they come up with is just, as my 11 year old would say, dog water. No understanding of actual customers and product - make announcement of things and WAAAy before we can Demo anything, etc. All in all they are a good team here but it's a good marketing team which basically an oxymoron.

Vent away @ventox35 , anonymous trash talking and spewing of internal frustrations is chicken noodle soup for our sales souls (if we have them anymore) and one of the core pillars of this site.

Long story short, architects like pretty things, engineers want the building to operate properly and design an optimal and efficiency system and are bound by things like gravity, physics, thermodynamics, etc. this means that the pretty things architects like arenโ€™t always best for operation and design and we tend to butt heads a lot. Engineers are typically hired by architects and are sub contractors to them which can complicate things.
