Do you feel trapped in sales?

I'm about to start as an SDR and I keep seeing people talking about how they are trapped in sales and they don't know what to do. Do a lot of people feel this way or a loud minority?

Define trapped. I know tons of folks that have transitioned out of sales. Marketing and customer success are the most common transition roles but really anything is possible. Sales is not highly specialized like becoming a teacher, engineer or a doctor so not sure how they’re trapped. I’d guess they got used to big commission checks and they know they can’t make that in those other roles 😁

I would define trapped as making it hard to transition out of a sales role

You're never trapped, but you can become complacent. Don't do that.

Trapped? As in, can't find a comparable salary with another role and remote, with a flexible schedule? Yeah, then I'm trapped.

I mean, seriously. Anything else would be 1/3 the money and 3X the aggravation.

I mean sometimes sales can grind my gears lol, but I’d choose this still over plenty of other roles.

You're not human if you can't find something to complain about even when you've got the best situation possible.

I don't know about trapped, but I definitely don't think I could see myself doing anything else. A buddy of mine keeps telling me how much he loves working in cybersecurity, and that he thinks I'd do great in the field as well. But the idea just doesn't sit right with me. When I first left financial services (banking and insurance) I worked a technical support job in data management, I didn't enjoy any of it.

I don't think I'm smart/talented enough to go into the trades or blue collar type of work. Any home projects I do are pretty low key and only after watching a million YouTube videos, so I don't think I'd work out in that type of field as a career. I could see myself running a cigar shop or lounge, but with the regulations and taxes involved, it's probably a bigger headache than I'd want.

Anyway, I just think I like sales and that's why I stay.

Yes I see it as a battle to change my role drastically, but its hard to do that no matter if I am in a Finance/Marketing or any other role

It doesn’t matter where you end up - the skills you learn in sales will help make you successful in any career path. You’re never trapped - even if you don’t like it after 2 years you can pivot to another path with a great skill set. Enjoy the ride!
