Enterprise territory lock-in

If I start an Ent AE role in a particular city/region, am I locking myself in to work exclusively in that region for the foreseeable future?

Also, thoughts on PA as a territory?

Typically yes, most companies want reps who are local. Moreover it behooves you to build a stable of contacts you can keep going back to.

As for PA, depends on what you're selling. Cheese wiz, yes. Dallas Cowboys memoriablia, not so much.

This made me chuckle. You are right about building a solid contact list.

Depends on the size of the company. If you move to a start up with six reps your territory is naturally going to be different than if you work at a large company with a thousand reps. I know a few people that have flipped coasts. It’s rare but definitely not impossible.

Yes!   And as small companies grow the sales team out, naturally the territories will shrink as new reps join.
In the bigger companies, though, the territories can literally change annually, which really hurts for a long sales-cycle solution and really working a territory.  Sounds like with "PA" as a territory, the company has a built out sales team, so the question really is if it's a good territory.

I'd ask how many sales managers there are, how many teams, and that will give a good sense of if there's ability to move to other territory over time.

Both of these things vary so much from company to company. Ideally, you wouldn't want to be moving from territory to territory.

How does your org define Enterprise? Do you think part of your reach would be other surrounding states? What types of companies are your ideal customer?

Are these questions more focused on the individual role/PA as a territory? or the question of territory lockin?

Yes, you would likely lock-in for some time. Majority of your stuff would stay the same in my experience.
Other questions are things you should think about to understand how good PA territory is. Have had PA for a while, good alignment with the stuff I sell but maybe not all products.

What do you sell? Do a quick TAM and understand if PA is even worth it as a territory for your product based on the availability of ICPs.
