Feel Like I’m Being Held Back (an update!)

hello fellow sales savages, here's hoping my boss doesn't see this!

well I felt like my company wasn't doing well, turns out my gut is always right!

since I got there 6 months ago we lost a manufacturer and a salesperson, just found out this week we are losing one of our top manufacturers!

they probably account for 75% of the deals I close. I'll probably close another $200k or so for them in the next month before our relationship is officially over.

I've talked to our sales staff and literally everyone is thinking of leaving, we all agree we don't have shit to sell!

my first instinct was to jump ship, but the person who got me into sales had some ideas, and I want your opinion!

He thinks I could try to stay, push for a huge salary increase (50% or more) and get a title that could help my career as well. the company is fine on cash flow, it's just not looking good long term to make big money $250-$350k like I could elsewhere. He thinks I also give them a deadline to pick up some new good quality manufacturers or I walk.

tbc I have a great reputation in this industry and town and could have multiple offers by next week.

Somehow, he seems to be a wise guy - the one who got you into the company. His way / opinion doesn't seem that bad to me in all honesty @LightingLeader

Yeah he’s a smart dude. He’s at a competitor but we used to work together

Devil's advocate: why would they give you a huge raise?

That’s what I thought, if you can get it good for them. But it would surprise me

To which I thought how does this person not know they have a pretty good chance of being laid off?

They’ve already told me heads will roll but not mine. They’ve got plenty of runway. Been around for a couple decades

I hear yah. I always think there's no downside in asking. But, if they're losing manufacturers and ability to sell then they might start getting tight fisted.

Yeah honestly my biggest worry is I stay. Have nothing to sell. Spend two years making this same salary(because I can’t get my commissions high enough with nothing to sell) and then I still have to move and start from square one again

so in theory this could work. BUT i would make sure you have something to back up the ask. how are you ranking against other ppl in your position that would do the same?

i have tried this and it failed so maybe im just jaded. 😂

I’ve had multiple manufacturers we represent tell me I’m booking so many appointments it’s making other people look bad. I don’t know numbers wise but I’m closing some pretty large deals. Also I could easily leave and go somewhere else for at least the same pay. Low $100k base is normal for my industry tbh

You could always try staying for 6 months in the new position and if it doesn't work out you can leave then. Is there risk for you to try staying or delaying going elswhere?

Not really too much of a downside other than it may slow down me getting to a higher salary

I have more updates! Although I’m not sure anyone will see this. The company is considering becoming employee owned, and through that I could be one of the people that take it over from the current people running the company. So I could potentially have way more money in a few months, gonna give it a shot and find out!

it doesn't hurt to try it his way. I would just come prepared with reasons as to why you deserve a raise (for example everyone is leaving and they can buy your loyalty), and having an offer in hand from another company can give you some strong leverage.

The flip side is, if they give you a raise and a new title, they might put fixing the mess on you and turn you into the scapegoat if/when it doesn't get fixed. I don't see that being likely but its definitely something to keep in mind as a possibility.

Closed a $60k deal after my manager said we’ve lost this after the two people I was speaking to didn’t feel like introducing us to the CEO until they figured out some technical aspects. It felt so good.
