What’s the reasoning behind fractional vs hiring a long term leader?

Reasons...bad hires mainly, promoting top sales IC but turns out they can't lead, most Founders are not capable of managing/leading sales teams, save cost, etc

Good IC lead by a founder. If the founder can’t sell or manage sales then why are you leading a company?

I have been asked to via one of the networks. I turned it down since in order to lead a business, you need to really be imbedded.

I'm not sure you'll get a big response here. Most of us are ICs or managers, not those who would be in the position to hire a C-level exec.
Good luck, though.

…by the way, a fractional sales leader makes most sense at a small company…. Maybe 4-10 sales reps

I’m not reporting to a part time manager who doesn’t even work at the company. Fuck that. Hire someone.

I wouldn't want a distracted leader personally.

Yes (not by choice obviously because I wasn't in charge), and it did not go well, but that was because of the person.

He wasn't bought in at all and just acted like a temporary consultant because... you know... he was one.

One time he asked us to sponsor his podcast, and I was like, "Dude, you work here. Really?"

Fractional sales leaders is a bunch of BS, IMO. They set up a tech stack and then then manage by CRM. Sure, a few might sit with the sales team on some outbound, but its mostly managing by %.

I think the “fractional” part is disqualifying. Part time leader is like a part time spouse. As a seller you just ain’t gonna make the commitment.

My ex-company hired a fractional leader. Note that they won't be able to "own" the company up because they are only contract based employee. That comes with a downside. Their thought processes MIGHT be a little half baked. Their stand on things would pivot based on what you think - which doesn't work so for a leadership role. You want your leaders to come with their own thought process.
