Gym Time - Before or After?

Ok, I've seen one or two posts on this but I'm curious to see the actual split. I've recently been getting back into the gym (I'm tired of lacking physical gains while I keep up my $$$ gains).

I'm trying to figure my best workout schedule and I am more of an evening person, so that's what I've been sticking with.

Do you go before work to psych yourself into the deal-grabbing, quota-crushingl, intern-bashing mindset?

Or are you going after work to slam those weights, shedding the anger and frustration from those roadblocks and speedbumps in your sales cycle? (Pretending that one prospect is getting lashes from your rope wrestler throws??)

When do you go to the gym and why?

Before. Fires me up for the day, and then I can do whatever I want after work. Nobody goes to happy hours at 5 am unless you are still awake in Vegas. So going before starts my day off with a win, and still allows me to be social after work when the Coors Knights gather.

That is a great argument for morning workouts. +1 for that column haha. Just have to transition to moving my body before the sun.

It is definitely a bit tough for the first week but you get used to it fast.

I do enjoy getting a good weights session done in the morning (pre-covid at least).

When my boss was making me want to yeet out windows, midday yoga was the only thing keeping me sane.

Everyone look at this one, that is solid. I hadn't thought about yoga. But if you need to find inner peace halfway through I can see it being a great outlet.
Also sorry your boss makes you feel that you have to find inner peace halfway through a workday

Hard to beat midday yoga.

Used to have an instructor come in once a week at an old job I worked at - was a great perk.

Lunch break, it's all about quality time outside of work for me.

Run in the morning before work, lift weights at lunch, then I am home at able to hang w fam. i hate leaving the house when home for workout time when thats all the time i get with them.

How long does that take? Or how long are you taking for lunch break? My issue is if I went to workout during my lunchbreak I would have to turn around and drive home the second I pulled into the parking lot.
I get a short lunch :/

about 90 min. change is 5 min. workout is an hour. that leaves 25 min - i need that to cool down, take a quick shower, then change back to work clothes and get my food prepped and eat at my desk.

i stay at work, we have gym & showers here

Solid workout. That's nice to have a gym at your work. I used to work at a place where some of the sales team would go workout during lunch, except the problem was they wouldn't/didn't take the time to shower after.
Most people would steer clear of them in the afternoons because of the BO.

gross. yeah its just an hour. but changing, showers, etc. add more time. gotta factor that in.

Night is also tricky in the south. You have the wet heat AND the race to beat the mosquito truck so you don't get tagged.

I was before work pre pandemic because it got my going for the day and I was much sharper. Now I go after work because the majority of my team is east coast based and I am PST so i'm not trying to wake up at 3 am for a workout.

Ya I got to bed pretty early as is and start working between 630 and 7 so mornings are just kinda out for me, plus i now live 15-20 minute drive from the gym each way so after work is the only option for me

I like to hit multiple walks around my office park every day. Sometimes I'll hit a run before or after work and I play in some sports leagues (Soccer on Wednesday, and Golf with whatever friends will play with me on the weekends) but for the most part, I have stopped going to the gym since I hung up my cleats when I graduated college.

I can relate to that, I did a rec soccer league last winter but it was just ok, not awesome for how much time it took out of my life.
Sports for socializing is great though!

I get a way better workout (physically) in the afternoon after work. However, the morning workout IS really good for mental focus (at least when I can wake up at 5am to get to the gym). I bounce between the two times but prefer the afternoon workout to expend all the remaining energy in my body as well as work out thoughts I wasnt able to get to during work hours. To each their own.

Pre-Pandy I was a morning guy. Got in a really solid routine of getting up at 5am to get a good lift in before work and somehow managed to not crash in the afternoon. Now I'm afterwork cuz I got dog duty in the morning (also very enjoyable).

I'd like to think the dogs are why we all really work anyways. That's why I love WFH. My dog is sleeping by my feet while I type this.

I know with these things it's best to have a set routine but dad life has me bounce around a lot. If the night prior was shit and a crying child had me up more than usual I'll skip the morning workout. If my work day is super crammed I can't fit in anything mid day. I'm usually reluctant to do anything after work because it's the only quality time I get with my daughter during the work week.

Short answer, I get in what I can when I can.

Yoga or pilates, some form of thorough stretching in the morning does my body wonders. Only been doing it for a couple weeks now but I have way less pain overall

Exactly. And early mornings mean you get your work done early, before people start asking you for questions and need help with tasks. This means I'm usually "done" with my day's work by around noon and have the rest of the day to prepare/relax

I always go before, best way to start the day and I usually have more energy in the morning than afternoon, so its best for me to do it first thing in the morning.

Can always take out the frustration after having a rough day, not to say imagining my Marketing teams face on the punching bag helps a lot.

Have a great meal and pass out. Best way to end weekdays

I need to go before, otherwise life happens and I never get around to it.

Also, my productivity rapidly declines after 5pm. No way I'm going to get my max output when my body is screaming for food and alcohol.

Mostly because I cannot function without 1,000mg of caffeine in my system in the morning, so trying to crush a workout is not fucking happenin'

That's also when I find the most time to go.

on WFH days (I am partially back in) I workout around lunch (cardio in the morning before). On in office days, I try and get something done in the morning then workout when I get home.

Dang, yeah you have to be awake before the workout long enough to avoid having that happen. I think it's about tricking your circadian rhythm.

I say before work, then my alarm goes off and I dont get up. Then say lunch, but stupid meetings pop up, then the afternoon rolls around and I am beat. When I do work out it is usually early am or late pm.

Before hypes me up for the day and makes me more calm and focused but it can be hard some days to get up. I aim to do 3 days in the morning and 2 days after work. Best of both to mix it up a little.

I found joining a group gym (F45 is where I work out in the mornings, lift in evenings at a gym) is a great way to hold myself accountable for dragging my tired ass out of bed. Easier when you have hot coaches yelling at you and telling you exactly what to do. And it's a $20 late fee cancel which adds up quickly so it forces me to get out of bed!

Has to be after for me. I have the metabolism of a small hippo. I’m almost always hungry, and eating/eating well has always been the real obstacle to fitness and well-being for me. . I’m absolutely not a morning person, but for me to workout before work, aside from waking up early implies rising early enough to eat a solid meal, crushing the workout itself, and then eating another solid meal before I start my day. . After that my metabolism will be in overdrive all day and I’ll need to eat 2-3 small farm animals to stay full. It’s brutal, and totally unviable. . After work makes the most sense, and like others have said, I kick the shit out of myself, tire myself out, eat well and pass out.

I've tried before work but I'm a terrible morning person. Lunchtime I'm too hungry and just want to decompress. After work, or even after dinner I just shut the brain down and get to work.
