How far are we from AI cold calling on behalf of companies and doing the job better than 50% of reps out there?

Came across this AI tool which lets you voice clone anyone they have on the website and get them to say anything. There is a great quote by Professor Albert Allen Bartlett that states "The greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function”. I bring this up because if they can clone the voices of famous people and get them to say anything I would predict we are about 1 year away from AI being better than about 10% of reps out there. 2 years from AI surpassing 50% of reps 3 years from AI being in the top 1% of reps for booking demos. Now my numbers might be way off but that's why it is a prediction. On the one hand I think this is massively deflationary and should lower everyone's cost of living. On the other hand I hope humanity figures out a way to replace a lot of jobs that will be rendered obsolete by AI. I think closing will be safe for awhile, but the straight up SDR role could be disrupted in the coming years.

If AI takes over, then I think the amount of calls they will do will be an insane amount. Leading to more spam filters from buyers blocking AI calls. Leading to more human interactions

My question is, will AI. be good enough for people to not be able to distinguish if its a real human and if not, even if its very good, are people willing to set up meetings with robots?

Not the least to say AI. is built and on collective data so are companies going to be willing to input sensitive info into these systems?

And then further to that point, could people really mess with AI. by feeding crap info into the areas it collects info from thus rendering the tool useless?

This is text to voice which is nothing new, maybe sounds better but isnt really revolutionary as far as i can see, it wont handle objections or questions on that initial call without the AI. aspect and unless that data is provided by a closed and encrypted source, will companies really embrace it?

Personally i dont see any threat in the near to medium future.

My hypothesis is the AI will just book the meeting for a rep because on an actual zoom it will be much harder for an AI to prove it’s not a bot. Could be wrong though you are spot on about the data point. Lot of lawsuits will be coming in the next few years about what data can and can’t be used to train these things

Yeh my main thing is how will the bot handle an objection to the meeting or a complex product related question on the initial call, I just cant see it taking over for many years if at all.

Exactly. The way sales is happening is changing as well, taking more creative approaches to cut through crap, AI wont do that.

I think it's going to be like internet and dotcom bubble. We all use internet now. We have more jobs thanks to internet. And same for AI. I don't think anyone would want to watch AI generated celebs for long. I use ChatGPT and SalesGPT occasionally and that's it. I think also too much AI will become ouroboros and destroy itself

Excellent comment. I’m reading What Technology Wants by Kevin Kelly and he makes the point that technology, while solving many of our problems, it also creates new challenges. It is a double edge sword. I think you are correct it will eliminate many jobs, but create even more.

I guess you snooze you lose and it will be the same here. There'll be AI that won't go anywhere and solutions that will. Yuval Noah Harari had a good theory years ago that maybe it would create a new social class useless people. But that's not AI that's just overpopulation

It's not there yet, but inbound is a whole different story. IVRs are dead. AI assistants can answer, direct, speak and pull 75 simultaneous API calls to deal with complex customer issues.

There are tools on the marketing doing much of this now. One that I know of in particular will run your cadences fully personalized and all you have to do is feed it in source point like LI and then provide value points for various target roles. If a prospect is interested it can book the meeting with a rep.

If I were an SDR I’d be worried. Though still at least a few years out from possibly taking AE roles.

As far as voice spoofing. It can sound like who ever you want, but still needs to be “intelligent” enough to navigate a serious of questions. Order takers will vanish. Sellers will continue.

I personally don't see it getting into to cold calls to a level where they are better than 50% of reps. Maybe that is me overestimating the quality of SDRs out there, but we shall see

If it’s good now, imagine what it’ll be like in 5 years. Not only that, it’ll know that you need a product or service because of data that supports its hypothesis.
I think it’ll be major game changer for cold outreach.

Now imagine you create an AI tool to answer cold calls?

What's the result?
The greatest cold calls ever we will get to read all about on LinkedIn? Or an endless conversation that collapses on itself creating a black hole and destroying life as we know it?

I am not in sales because I am good at Science but I think those are the only potential results.

AI is not going to take over SDR roles indefinitely. It may be used at first, but once a buyer knows they are talking to a robot, they will ghost them. Also, the US gov is cracking down on automatic sales tools like autodialers and prerecorded calls. I don't think they will ignore AI sales tools much longer. So, SDRs will always be needed, but like anything, the demand will fluctuate.
